UCI Stories exhibit opens Monday, May 23

Ready for 50+ anteater antics told through conversations between former and current anteaters? Zot zot! Anteaters come together to share memories, events, and changes throughout UC Irvine’s 50 years of history.

UCI Stories

Inspired and imprinted with words spoken during the filmed oral histories, UCI Stories highlights the bright past and brilliant future of UCI through the memories, reflections, and predictions of its community. Artfully curated quotes of campus leaders, innovators, alumni, faculty and staff, document how over the past 50 years, UCI has given birth to generations of community-oriented difference-makers driven by a pioneering spirit that has permeated the campus long before a physical building ever stood on the land. UCI Stories captures how this spirit glues UCI together, and often after graduation calls Anteaters back home. Every great story has three main parts: characters with whom you can identify, a memorable and imaginable setting, and a plot based on the unexpected experiences of protagonists. This is UCI Stories.

Opening night speakers are Robert Cohen (UCI Claire Trevor Professor of Drama, Emeritus/Founding Faculty), Jenny Doh ’91 (UCI’s First Student Regent/Past President, UCI Alumni Association), Elizabeth Toomey (Daughter of Founding Chancellor Aldrich/Retired UCI Assistant Vice Chancellor, Community and Government Relations), and Joseph L. White (UCI Professor Emeritus of Psychology and Psychiatry), will engage in a fascinating conversation on UCI’s history and thoughts for the future; with panel moderation by Krystal Tribbett, UCI Libraries 50th Anniversary Project Historian.

The program will be followed by a light reception and exhibit viewing in Langson Library, UCI. The event is free and open to the public. Space is limited; reservations are first come, first served.

The UCI Stories Project is a unique oral history project, launched by UCI Libraries, that pairs over 100 UCI affiliates for dynamic conversations to commemorate UCI’s 50th Anniversary. The reminiscences collected offer first-hand perspectives that tell the multifaceted story of UCI’s intellectual contributions, key turning points, and unique legacy. The UCI Libraries’ 50th Anniversary Exhibit, “UCI Stories” is a product of this effort.

A Look Back on Clayton Garrison

Staff at UCI Special Collections and Archives were sad to learn that Clayton Garrison, founding dean of UCI’s School of Fine Arts, passed away on July 27, 2015. Garrison once recalled in 1974 that he was attracted to Irvine because it was an “opportunity to initiate, in a new situation, a program that was different from any other programs in the fine arts on a University of California campus.” And so, when he joined UCI in 1964, he set out to build a “studio- and performance-centered” fine arts program at the undergraduate level.

To him, “starting a whole school involving art, dance, drama, music, and film with only five faculty members was a rare opportunity.” Garrison recruited some of the top artists in their field to join the School of the Fine Arts’ founding faculty including Eugene Loring who was appointed Chairman of Dance, and who introduced ballet as a study in the University of California curriculum. Robert Cohen, who Garrison directed in a Shakespeare play at UC Berkeley, was appointed chair of UCI’s Drama Department. In 1964, Garrison appointed John Coplans as Director of the University Art Gallery. Coplans, editor for Artforum magazine, was well connected with the contemporary art world, and he influenced Garrison by suggesting new faculty recruits. One of the first art professors Coplans recruited was Tony DeLap, and the faculty grew to include Larry Bell, Ed Bereal, Vija Celmins, Ron Davis, Robert Irwin, Craig Kauffman, Philip Leider, John Mason, Ed Moses, Barbara Rose, and Alan Solomon.

Garrison also invited renowned artists, including David Hockney and Roy Lichtenstein, to serve as guest lecturers and teachers at what he believed was a truly interdisciplinary fine arts program.

Garrison served as dean of the school for its first 17 years, during which he did everything from direct plays, operas and musicals, to choreograph stage, teach, help establish UCI’s esteemed M.F.A programs, and more. After retiring as dean, he spent nine years teaching acting and running UCI’s month long Music Theater Program in New York. The projects that Garrison helped produce at the School of Fine Arts, now known as the Claire Trevor School of the Arts, and beyond were well-received with high praise from the campus and region alike.

Prior to his appointment at UCI, Garrison was Chair of the Department of Drama and Vice Chair of the Division of Humanities at UC Riverside. He also taught at UC Santa Barbara and the Laguna College of Art + Design.

The UCI Special Collections and Archives is pleased to house Clayton Garrison’s collection documenting his work in theater at UCI, New York, and internationally.

Guests will explore Shakespeare’s dramatic poetry, view early printings of Shakespeare’s play and see the Libraries’ copy of Shakespeare’s First Folio. Seminars led by Julia Lupton, Public Services Librarian in Special Collections & Archives, Stephen MacLeod, and Assistant University Librarian for Research Resources, John Renaud. Special 50th Anniversary guest, Robert Cohen, Founding Chair of the UCI Drama Department, to attend the August 7 seminar.

Julia Reinhard Lupton is an esteemed Shakespearean scholar. Professor Lupton was named a Chancellor’s Fellow at UCI in 2007 for her contributions to Shakespeare studies. In 2014, she was elected Trustee of the Shakespeare Association of America. Recent scholarly books include Thinking with Shakespeare: Essays on Politics and Life and Citizen-Saints: Shakespeare and Political Theology. Her current book project, Shakespeare Dwelling: Habitation, Hospitality, Design, aims to use the visual, cognitive, and phenomenological resources of design theory to disclose the many points of creative contact between formal and vernacular acts of design on Shakespeare’s stage.

Remembering Chancellor Peltason

It was with great sadness that the staff of Special Collections & Archives heard the news of Jack Peltason’s passing. Although most staff members never met him in person, they came to know him through his collections housed in the Special Collections and Archives Department. Jack Peltason joined the faculty of UCI as Dean of the College of Arts, Letters, and Sciences in 1963 while the campus was still in the planning stages. He was named second vice chancellor of academic affairs in 1964. He was a pivotal part of events and decisions such as recruiting faculty until he left UCI in 1967  to return to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Peltason returned to UCI in 1984 to become the university’s second chancellor. He held this post from 1984-1992.

The Special Collections and Archives is honored to preserve and provide access to the materials that document his extraordinary contributions to UCI and the community.

Special visit from The New Swan Shakespeare Festival company

We were thrilled that about twenty members of The New Swan Shakespeare Festival company came to our Reading Room yesterday to see the First Folio and other Shakespeare related material from our collection. Julia Lupton, UCI Professor of English and Comparative Literature, joined the group and shared her expertise in Shakespeare as we discussed the material. In addition to the First Folio we looked at the first facsimile of the first edition published in 1807, the Norton facsimile prepared by Charlton Hinman in 1968, pamphlets on Twelfth Night and Romeo and Juliet as performed by Madame Helena Modjeska in 1883, cabinet card photographs of Helena Modjeska in costume for roles in Twelfth Night and Romeo and Juliet, and miniature books of plays by Shakespeare.  It was a great opportunity to view and discuss the various editions of Shakespeare. As one of the cast members said “This has really tied the history of Shakespeare’s early books to our productions this summer. It’s provided greater historical context.” It was a wonderful event and we hope to do it again next summer! [Photographs by Allan Helmick.]

Did David Hockney teach at UCI?

The Studio Art Department at UCI had an amazing group of faculty from the very first year of the program in 1965-66.  Those recruited as faculty and lecturers in the early years included Craig Kaufman, Tony DeLap, Robert Irwin, Richard Smith, Robert Morris, Phil Leider, Larry Bell, Ed Bereal, John McCracken, Ed Moses, Vija Celmins, Ken Price, Ron Davis, Laddie John Dil, John Mason, John Paul Jones, and others.  David Hockney certainly was present at the opening of the “Faculty ’68” show in the UCI Art Gallery in April 1968 (see below). The exhibition, featuring works of then UCI Studio Art faculty Vija Celmins, Tony DeLap, Robert Irwin, Craig Kaufman, and Richard Smith, ran from April 16- May 5, 1968. So, did David Hockney teach here? Probably for only one quarter, but real definitive evidence of that hasn’t surfaced yet. Let us know what you think.

Lunch with Robert Cohen!

Honorary Artistic Director of the New Swan Shakespeare Festival and Professor of Acting, Robert Cohen, presented a lunchtime talk on ‘Acting in Shakespeare’ in the New Swan Theater!

His talk was so fascinating, that we decided to find some photos of Prof. Cohen in action.

Special Collections and Archives has the Robert Cohen Papers [MS-P069], which comprises fifty-three production books! These books include scripts, reviews, photographs and stage directions, which document Cohen’s work as director for theater productions at UCI and the Utah and Colorado Shakespeare Festivals.

We found that Prof. Cohen is, literally and figuratively, a man of many hats.

Robert Cohen is the founding chair of the University of California, Irvine Drama Department and a renowned professor, director, translator, playwright, essayist, and drama critic. In 2001 he was named Claire Trevor Professor of Drama at UCI.

Remembering Sam McCulloch

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Sam McCulloch, the founding Dean of Humanities and Professor Emeritus of History at UC Irvine. McCulloch first arrived at UCI in 1964 as one of the founding faculty members and remained an important leader on campus throughout his entire life. He was UCI’s unofficial historian, compiling records, stories, letters, and other historical material for his 1996 book Instant University, which covers the history of the UCI campus from 1957 to 1993. McCulloch also conducted oral history interviews with 97 members of UCI’s prominent faculty and staff from 1967 to 1993, including Chancellors Daniel Aldrich and Jack Peltason, as well as Nobel Laureates F. Sherwood Rowland and Frederick Reines. In 2009, McCulloch donated his faculty papers to UCI Special Collections and Archives, which include correspondence, research notes, clippings, and bibliographies. We at Special Collections and Archives are forever indebted to Sam McCulloch for his commitment to documenting, preserving, and sharing the rich history of this campus.

Numerous interviews from the collection of Samuel McCulloch Oral Histories (AS-033) are available here at the Online Archive of UCI History. Both audio recordings and transcripts of selected interviews are available for use online, and the remaining interviews from the collection will be digitized and added to the Online Archive soon.

John Mason’s Ceramics Class Fall 1968

Legendary ceramics artist John Mason taught at UCI from 1967-76 and then again in 1987.  He was the Chair of Studio Art from 1974-1976. Recent attention to his work occurred in Pacific Standard Time exhibits throughout Southern California and in the current exhibit of his landmark piece 21-foot-long Blue Wall (1959) at the Laguna Art Museum. In the Fall of 1968, the UCI Studio Art faculty consisted of Robert Irwin, Craig Kaufman, Tony de Lap, John Mason and Philip McAleer. John Mason taught Ceramics 86A that quarter, a class for freshmen and sophomores. Below are photographs from that class.
