In May 1970, UCI students, faculty, and staff engaged in strikes and other forms of collective action not only to protest U.S. involvement in Vietnam and the Kent State massacre, but also to seek alternative forms of education.  The documents here from our Gateway Literature Collection provide evidence of how students organized protests and the  “People’s Free University,” and how faculty and staff joined to support their efforts.  Also check out May 1970 issues of the New University for more stories: May 6,  May 8, May 12, and May 14. Over 400 colleges and universities nationwide also had strikes during these two weeks.
