Congratulations to the class of 2014!

The biggest commencement in UCI history is finally just one day away! Are you graduating folks ready for this? What about your guests? Check the section on security for a list of permitted and prohibited items and make plans to stay cool, hydrated, and be sure to slab on some sunscreen! It’s going to be a long day in the sun!

1993 Commencement

The 2013 UCI Commencement weekend is quickly approaching! Soon the campus will be filled with excited graduates and proud families and friends celebrating their achievements. Congratulations to the Class of 2013! ZOT!

UCI’s 3rd Commencement: June 15, 1968

UCI’s 46th commencement ceremonies will take place this weekend, June 10-12, and will include numerous commencement exercises and events, but in 1968 there was only one on June 15, 1968. The commencement speaker was Dr. Louis Benezet, then President of the Claremont University Center (now the Claremont University Consortium).  His speech was titled “Who Shall Lead Us?” There were approximately 400 graduates in the 1968 commencement, there will be many more this weekend. Congratulations to all 2011 graduates!

Second Commencement – June 10, 1967

At the second graduation ceremony on June 10, 1967, (left to right) Dean of Biological Sciences Edward A. Steinhaus  (UCI’s first appointed dean), the founding Dean of Humanities Samuel C. McCulloch, and the first Chair of the Department of English and Comparative Literature Hazard Adams.

Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs Jack W. Peltason. He later served as the second UCI Chancellor from 1984-1992, and UC President from 1992-1995.

The first UCI Dean of Social Sciences James G. March.

Fifth Commencement – June 13, 1970

Forty years ago, UCI’s fifth commencement ceremony took place in  Campus Park, now Aldrich Park.  Dr. Harrison Scott Brown, Professor of Geochemistry at the California Institute of Technology, spoke on “Technological Change and the Human Condition.” There were approximately 800 students graduating on June 13, 1970. Just a few weeks ago, the forty-fifth commencement ceremonies saw approximately 8,000 students graduate in four days of commencement ceremonies held between June 5th and 13th.
