Move Over November, It’s Movember!

The idea for Movember was born in Australia in 2003 when two mates, Travis Garone and Luke Slattery, questioned where the “mo” (short for mustache) had gone and vowed to bring it back by challenging their mates to grow a mo during the month of November. Inspired by a relative’s fundraising for breast cancer, the friends decided to dedicate their campaign to men’s health issues. Today, Movember is a global annual campaign to “change the face of men’s health” by raising awareness about men’s health issues, specifically prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health problems. The Movember Foundation continues Travis and Luke’s vision by challenging men to grow moustaches during the month of November to spark conversation, raise funds, and awareness.

According to the Movember Foundation:

1 in 2 men will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime
1 in 7 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer
Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in males between the ages of 15 and 35
More than four times as many men as women die by suicide in the U.S.
The average life expectancy for American men is almost five years less than women

In honor of Movember, Special Collections and Archives takes a look back at the mo on UCI campus during the 1960s and 70s.

Special Collections & Archives spent the day at the annual Anteater Involvement Fair! Zot!

Our motivation: to preserve UCI history! The University Archives (at the UCI Libraries!) wants to preserve your student organization records! Any material including constitutions, by-laws, photos, posters, meeting minutes… whether physical or digital, including facebook sites, instagram feeds, and photos straight from your camera, we’re ready for everything! If there’s anythng you don’t need anymore, don’t throw it out! Send it to the library!

Backstage Passes from the ASUCI Records

The UCI campus in the decade of the 80’s was a rad venue for seeing well-known bands of the time perform. Ever heard of Missing Persons, Oingo Boingo, or X? The Associated Students of the University of California in Irvine (ASUCI) invited groups such as these to provide entertainment to the campus community.
Here are scans from just a few of the materials in this collection consisting mainly of backstage passes and oversized posters for events from 1976 to 2006.

The collection comprises the records of the Associated Students, University of California, Irvine from 1974 to 2006. The materials in this collection consist mainly of photographs, invoices, receipts, business memoranda, correspondence, forms, internal affairs, organizing activities, backstage passes to events, and oversized posters for events such as Wayzgoose, Reggae Fest, Homecoming, and entertainment provided by ASUCI to the campus community.

Gateway Plaza

Gateway Plaza has been a central hub of activity on the UC Irvine campus since its opening in 1965. From the flagpoles to the stairs leading into Aldrich Park, this area between Langson Library and Gateway Commons has seen countless protests, speeches, events, memorials, pep rallies and performances by students and community members alike. To this day, this area is a central place for students to congregate and share their ideas. Check out these photos from UCI’s early years:

Get Ready for Celebrate UCI!

This Saturday, April 20th, the UC Irvine campus will hold its annual Celebrate UCI event in Aldrich Park. This campus-wide celebration includes live entertainment, carnival games and rides, lots of food, arts & crafts, performances, the annual car show (15 years running!), and Wayzgoose, one of UCI’s oldest traditions. The festival also features an Open House, where many campus services will remain open in order for prospective students and the community to learn about the UCI campus. All events are free and parking is complimentary!

This celebration has been a campus favorite for decades. Here are some photos of Celebrate UCI and Wayzgoose festivals from the 1980s:

They will soon be available online via the Online Archive of UCI History, which documents the first 50 years of the campus in photographs, videos, audio recordings, publications, the New University newspaper, and other publications. Discover UCI

UCI’s First Cheerleaders

Tryouts for the first UCI cheerleading squad (aka songleaders) occurred at Gateway Plaza in November 1965. The first UCI varsity basketball game took place on December 1, 1965, at Campus Hall. Wearing their ZOT pins, the new songleaders helped cheer the team on to a 85-71 victory over UC Riverside.

Women’s History Month Library Exhibit, 1993-1995

In 1991 a group of staff and students created an exhibit in Langson Library on cross-cultural perspectives on women and work to celebrate Women’s History Month. In subsequent years, the installation of the Women’s History Month exhibit was continued by students enrolled in Women’s Studies 160: Research Methods and Sources in Women’s Studies.

Each year students from the course were divided in two groups and asked to organize their research and exhibit around a central theme related to women’s history. In 1992 the students surveyed the growth and development of Women’s Studies as a discipline; in 1993 they challenged associations inherent in the phrase “the year of the woman”; in 1994 the focus was on global feminism; and in 1995 the exhibit explored feminism in the past, present, and future.

Included below are photographs from librarian and Women’s Studies instructor Joan Ariel’s teaching files taken during the installation of the exhibits in 1993, 1994, and 1995:
