Chassis-Ergonomics

The chassis is the physical structure of the car: it is the skeleton that mounts the suspension, powertrain, steering and everything else that makes up a running car. The chassis sub-team’s objective is to design, manufacture, and verify a lightweight but robust chassis that mounts the other subsystems with proper triangulation. Ergonomics relates to driver comfort integration, largely dependent on driver height and subsequent body measurements. The chassis must conform to driver measurement clearances to ensure comfort and safety are met.

Chassis Design

Chassis subteam members CAD a design in Solidworks, perform Finite Element Analysis, and consult with other subteam leads to package their subsystems. Chassis members research methods of conducting FEA and estimated amount of forces that are applied along chassis members.

Chassis Manufacturing

Chassis manufacturing involves profiling and bending metal tubes, constructing jigs for tubing alignment, and welding tubes together. Verification activities for chassis includes checking alignment, weighing the chassis, conducting torsional rigidity tests, and ensuring other subsystem components fit.
