About BABP

Mission Statement

Through research, pedagogy, creative practice, and community engagement, Black Arts and Black Publics (BABP) is a platform dedicated to exploring, organizing, sustaining, and disseminating information around Black artistic, cultural, and political practice. BABP organizes and connects students, faculty, and community members at the University of California with individuals and institutions such as theaters, museums, non-profit community arts organizations, public-civic government entities, as well as tech and entertainment entities. BABP promotes creative practice and community engagement through an array of performance modalities that include, but are not limited to: critical performance ethnography and choreography, archival work, oral history, symposia, exhibitions, play readings and performances, installations, lectures, and curated discussions, all of which focus on creating a public sphere that embraces and promotes Black life and Black thriving.
