Budget Write-In Dec. 1
Dear UC Irvine Students, Faculty and Staff:
Over the past few weeks, students across the UC system have expressed – through demonstrations and protests – their anger and frustration with the UC Regents’ recent approval of yet another round of undergraduate fee increases.
Last Tuesday, about 300 students and supporters marched on our own campus. I am pleased and proud that the vast majority of them conducted themselves in a passionate but peaceful manner. With the exception of a brief scuffle resulting in minor injuries to a police officer and one arrest, our diverse group of demonstrators showed respect for campus property and for each other.
We support our students’ right to dissent and are fully empathetic with the additional hardships they face as a result of the continually escalating costs of higher education. It is now time for us all to come together and focus our energies on the restoration of state funding for higher education; this is the core issue from which our current financial difficulties spring and it must be addressed.
Across the UC system, faculty, staff and administrators are working diligently on many fronts to accomplish this. UC Irvine is holding its inaugural Budget Write-In on Tuesday, Dec. 1 and I strongly encourage each and every one of you to stop by and send a message to our legislators.
Sponsored by the UC Irvine Alumni Association, AGS and ASUCI, the write-in will take place 4:30-8 p.m. in the Phineas Banning Alumni House. Paper, pens food and music will be provided. For more information: www.uci.edu/write-in.
We will continue our advocacy efforts on behalf of UC and UCI throughout the year, and urge all members of the campus community will make a commitment to participating in these efforts – now and in the future. If we are to preserve the excellence of our university, and access to UC for all qualified students, we must make our voices heard – loud and clear – to our local legislators and to Sacramento.
I look forward to seeing you Tuesday.
