The Winter 2015 schedule of classes will be posted this Saturday, November 8th at http://websoc.reg.uci.edu/perl/WebSoc. In preparation, we have compiled the following information for you regarding enrollment in CHP courses for the upcoming quarter. For more information on when to enroll, be sure to visit the Registrar’s Calendar. The CHP staff will be available all of next week (except for Tuesday) to answer your enrollment questions. In fact, the week 6 coffee hour (Friday, November 14th, 9:00-11:00 a.m.) is designated for drop-in advising and the CHP advisors will be available to answer your questions over coffee and donuts (or bagels!)
NEW: SPECIAL HONORS SEMINARS OPEN TO ALL CHP SOPHOMORES, JUNIORS AND SENIORS The CHP is pleased to offer three small seminars that are open to all sophomores, juniors, and seniors in the CHP on a first come, first served basis. Please read the following seminar descriptions for more information about how these seminars may help you fulfill your CHP core course requirements. Check out CHP-News in the next few weeks for more information about how to register for these exciting classes!:
- Honors Scientific Realism and Instrumentalism (LPS H80): This 15-person seminar will examine foundational questions concerning the operation of the scientific enterprise and the interpretation of our best scientific theories. We will be especially concerned with arguments regarding the kind(s) of knowledge about the world that such theories are and are not able to deliver. This four-unit course will be taught by Professor Kyle Stanford, and may be used to meet one quarter of the CHP Science Core requirement. LPS H80 will also count towards GE Category II (Science & Technology).
- What is Time? Perspectives from Physics, Philosophy, Fiction, and Film (LPS H125): This 15-person seminar will examine how scientists, philosophers, and artists have thought about and tried to represent time over the last ~2500 years, by studying historical and contemporary scholarly work, literature, film, and physical theories. This four-unit course will be taught by Professor Jim Weatherall, and may be used to meet one quarter of the CHP Social Science Core requirement (at this time it is not being offered for GE credit, however).
- Honors Quantum Mechanics (LPS H141): This 15-person seminar will examine the standard formulation of quantum mechanics (which is used regularly to make accurate predictions based on few assumptions), the quantum measurement problem (what is wrong with quantum mechanics) and its implications, and several proposed solutions to this paradox. This four-unit class will be taught by Professor Jeff Barrett, and may be used to meet one quarter of EITHER the CHP Social Science Core OR Science Core requirement (at this time it is not being offered for GE credit, however).
FRESHMEN
- Humanities 1B & H1BS: Enrollment in Humanities 1B & H1BS will be done through authorization code, which you enter on WebReg along with the course code. Authorization codes for Honors Hum Core sections will be distributed in the CHP office beginning on Thursday, November 20th at 2:00pm. You MUST come to the CHP office to get your code. If you cannot come at 2:00pm, just come as soon as you can afterward during regular CHP office hours, Monday-Friday, 9:00am-4:00pm. There will be enough spaces for everyone who needs to enroll in Honors Hum Core. Please come prepared with a few preferences just in case we cannot give you your first choice. Please note that not all of the seminar sections listed in the schedule of classes will be offered. If you are an NCAA athlete or a declared Drama, Dance, or Music major who has scheduling difficulties due to your practice/rehearsal schedule, you need to email requests for specific sections to honors@uci.edu by November 19th, but you will still need to come to the office to pick up your actual codes. You need to enroll in both parts of Honors Humanities Core:
- Lecture (“Humanities Core Lec”); there will be three to choose from
- Seminar (“Hum Core Wrt Honors”); there are several to choose from and each of these is linked with a specific lecture
- Chemistry H2B/LB: If you are currently enrolled in Chemistry H2A/LA and you need to continue with general chemistry, then you need to enroll in Chemistry H2B/LB. In the unlikely event that you will be unable to continue with Honors Chemistry, we will address this schedule change with you in early January (grades will be posted on Tuesday, December 23rd). Until then, you should enroll in Honors Chem H2B/LB as normal.
SOPHOMORES & JUNIORS
- Social Science H1F: We have pre-authorized all sophomores and juniors for Honors Social Science Core. If Social Science H1F is full before you enroll and you need to take the course next quarter, then add yourself to the waitlist. Showing demonstrated need (via students on the waitlist) will allow us to secure a larger room for the course. Alternatives to Social Science H1F include taking Physics H90 or one of three special honors seminars (see blurbs above).
- Physics H90: This class has been specially designed for CHP non-science majors and is taught by the CHP founding director who was instrumental in developing the entire CHP curriculum in line with the program’s mission. We have pre-authorized all sophomores and juniors for Science Core. Enrollment in lecture and discussion is required, though discussion attendance is optional. If you have a verifiable conflict with the discussion for this course, email honors@uci.edu to be authorized to enroll despite the course conflict.
ADDITIONAL IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
- All CHP courses must be taken for a letter grade.
- Honors to Honors transfer students are not required to register for any CHP courses for Winter quarter.
- If you have unexpected or unusual course planning difficulties, you must submit a petition (to postpone, etc.) by the end of week 8. Be sure to call to schedule an appointment with a CHP advisor after you have written your petition. The CHP office phone number is (949) 824-5461. Petitions are not guaranteed to be approved.
- Please note that you do not need to take CHP Social Science Core and Science Core in order. You just need to take at least one course a quarter until both cores are completed.
Seniors who need to enroll in Science Core or Social Science Core, please email honors@uci.edu by November 19th to be authorized to enroll.
