This seminar will examine basic principles of freedom of speech under the First Amendment with a focus on how they apply on college campuses and will focus on the free speech rights of students and whether, when, and how expression can be regulated.

Chancellor Howard Gillman, Ph.D., is an award-winning scholar and teacher, he has academic appointments in the departments of law, political science, and history. Among his books are The Constitution Besieged: The Rise and Demise of Lochner Era Police Powers Jurisprudence (Duke 1993), The Votes That Counted: How the Court Decided the 2000 Presidential Election (Chicago 2001), and American Constitutionalism (with Mark Graber and Keith Whittington). He has also co-edited two other volumes and authored more than 40 articles and book chapters. He has received many awards for his scholarship, and for teaching excellence and dedication to students.

 

Prior to his appointment as provost and executive vice chancellor at UC Irvine, Dr. Gillman was a professor of political science, history, and law at the University of Southern California. From 2007 to 2012, he served as dean of the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences.

 

Howard Gillman became UC Irvine’s sixth chancellor on September 18, 2014.

The Civic and Community Engagement Minor is a very exciting campus-wide program for students. Specifically, the minor operates as a supplement to students’ major. The minor’s purpose is to provide students with interdisciplinary knowledge and training in engagement at local, national, and international level.  Overall, students in the minor program learn how to become active and responsible community members in the 21^st century.

The requirements for the minor are fairly minimal, and often build on very exciting and interesting campus opportunities that many students already pursue. Specifically, the minor has two required courses: University Studies 10 and University Studies 100, an internship (many students’ majors have internships or field placement requirements that can count), and 4 electives. There is a long list of already-approved courses across the entire campus (here is a link to the minor: http://engage.due.uci.edu/), and some courses can count both for students’ majors and minors.

One of the required courses for the minor, UniStu 10, will be offered this winter, 2018. The course is an introduction to public scholarship, community engagement, social action and philanthropy. The minor has received a $50,000 donation, and students in the course will decide how to distribute the funds to community organizations. In other words, students don’t just learn about community engagement, non-profits, and social action, students directly participate in these activities.
