This course (taught in English by Dr. Hart) follows the history and literary expression of some of the great European political uprisings, as well as smaller, individual acts of revolt and resistance. Beginning in the Holy Roman Empire, from the Peasants War to the French Revolution and beyond, we will examine resistance and resisters in texts by Kleist, Schiller, Büchner, and others. The course will also feature readings in political history and theory of crime and punishment. There will be several short papers and a final examination.
