Bio

Dr. William Collins is a globally acknowledged expert specializing in climate modeling and the science of climate change. His individual research focuses on the intricate interactions among greenhouse gases, aerosols, the coupled climate system, and the broader spectrum of global environmental changes.

Dr. Collins holds distinguished memberships in the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the American Physical Society (APS), the American Geophysical Union (AGU), and the American Meteorological Society (AMS). In 2019, he was honored with the AGU’s Tyndall History of Global Environmental Change Lectureship. Notably, he served as a Lead Author for the Fourth Assessment of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), contributing to the IPCC’s receipt of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. Dr. Collins has also taken on Lead Author roles in the Fifth and Sixth Assessments. His pivotal role as Chief Scientist in initiating the Department of Energy’s Accelerated Climate Model for Energy (ACME) program earned him the U.S. Department of Energy Secretary’s Achievement Award on May 7, 2015.

Prior to joining Berkeley and Berkeley Lab, Dr. Collins held the position of a senior scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and chaired the Scientific Steering Committee for the DOE/NSF Community Climate System Model project.

Dr. Collins earned his undergraduate degree in physics from Princeton University and obtained an M.S. and Ph.D. in astronomy and astrophysics from the University of Chicago.
