About the fellowship
This award is made possible by a generous donation from Tarow and Minako Indow. Tarow Indow was a professor in our department from 1979 until his passing in 2007. His research, reported in over 100 technical papers in major journals, covered geometric representations of visual space, formalisms of color space and of stochastic representations of semantic memory, and ability testing. You can read about Tarow’s life and career here: https://escholarship.org/uc/item/6j54969w
Every year, Indow Fellowships will be awarded to two graduate students in the UCI Cognitive Sciences department who show exceptional research skills and productivity, as demonstrated during their advancement to candidacy for the PhD. Awardees are selected by a Review Committee evaluating advancement exam papers written within the recent academic year (from Summer through Spring).
The winners will each receive a $7,000 stipend.
Procedure & Timeline
There is no nomination procedure. All eligible students in good academic standing who advanced for the PhD within this period are automatically nominated and considered for the award.
The Review Committee consists of several faculty from the Cognitive Sciences department. The Committee reviews advancement papers from all eligible students in August, and awards are announced in early September and fellowship stipends submitted shortly thereafter.
