StoryMapJS is a free tool from Northwestern University’s Knight Lab to help you tell stories on the web that highlight the locations of a series of events. By pulling in media from a variety of web sources, such as Google Maps, Twitter, Flickr, YouTube, Vimeo, Wikipedia, DropBox, and more, you can tell media-rich stories.
See some examples:
- Washington Post’s Islamic State StoryMap
- Game of Thrones: Arya’s Journey
- Hieronymus Bosh: Garden of Earthly Delights
Often used by journalists, this tool can also be used to create interactive supplements to research publications as well as student assignments with a reasonable enough learning curve to complete during the quarter.
No experience necessary, though the tool does require a Google account. Participants should bring their own laptops. Anyone who needs a laptop for the session can borrow a device at Langson Library.
