Will I be enrolled in courses with other UCI students, or courses specifically designed for the 3+2 program?
You will be taking normal classes with other UCI students.
Do you accept Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) students?
The courses offered by our School of Information and Computer Science is limited through this program. ICS is a separate school, and we (Engineering) cannot guarantee courses from ICS. If you are a CSE major, and still want to attend our program, you can only take courses under Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) of School of Engineering. However, you will have the option to apply to ICS for your graduate program.
How many classes can we take outside of Engineering?
Each student is allowed to take up to 2 courses total outside of Engineering during your fourth year. The schedules and classes you take are carefully selected so you will receive your undergraduate degree from your home institution. If you do not take all the necessary courses, you may not be able to graduate.
Are there any internship opportunities offered through UCI for units or credits?
Students are able to engage in Individual Study with a professor, which does grant units. However, you will need to find the professor on your own. For companies and industry, no, you will need to seek an internship on your own. Due to your I-20 dates, you won’t be able to intern in the U.S. until you start the graduate program.
How would I finish my Bachelor thesis at UCI?
You will either need to join a senior project team with the other UCI students, or conduct Individual Study with a faculty member. Please check details with your home institute regarding your graduation requirements.
Do I have a chance to compete for scholarships and part-time jobs?
Not during your fourth year. However, during the year when you enter graduate school, you may have the opportunity to seek internship off campus or TA or Grader position within the department. For students from China, the Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC) may have scholarships available. Please contact your university regarding CSC.

You can see the teaching plans (preliminary list of courses) by going to UCI Engineering Teaching Plans and selecting the appropriate year. If the year you are looking for is not yet posted, then you may need to check back at a later date. The teaching plan is usually very similar each year, so you can look at the previous year’s offerings to get a general idea of when courses will be offered the next year.
What are the requirements for applying to a graduate program at UCI?
Please refer to the graduate admissions frequently asked questions page for requirements. http://engineering.uci.edu/admissions/graduate/frequently-asked-questions For English, please check the minimum requirements from each department. Please try to maintain your UCI GPA above 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. These are minimums and do NOT guarantee admission.
Am I required to apply to a masters program at the Samueli School of Engineering?
The 3+2 program was created with the intention of having students study their senior year of their undergraduate degree in the Samueli School of Engineering (SSoE) with the intent of having them attend graduate school here as well, so we would like to retain students at our school. However, students are not required to apply the SSoE or UCI. They may apply to any other college or department, such as the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences. However, since the program is hosted by the SSoE, applying outside of Engineering will not give you any benefit when it comes to the application process. This program offers a separate application review through engineering, as well as the option to take up to two graduate courses that can be used towards an engineering graduate program. These benefits will not extend to other schools of departments.
Is thesis required for the M.S. degree within the School of Engineering at UC Irvine?
The only major that requires a thesis option is biomedical engineering. We require BME students to start a project with a faculty member during their fourth year at UCI. All other majors will have the option to do a course-only or thesis M.S.
What other interdisciplinary Master Degree Programs are offered within Engineering?
We also offer a few interdisciplinary M.S. programs including Networked System, Engineering Management, and Materials and Manufacturing Technology. Lastly, we offer a Master of Engineering program focused on “Internet of Things” (https://mecps.uci.edu/).
What is the typical monthly expense to live in Irvine?
It will depend on your spending habits. However, on average, students will spend about $1200 – $1500 a month, based on a shared room situation. If you learn how to cook and make meals yourselves, you will save a lot of money. 🙂
