Sell or Give Away Online

Safety Tips When Selling Online

Creating the advertisement:

  • Do not use your full name and do not list your address or phone number.
  • If you use photos in your advertisement, make sure you just show the item for sale. Do not include family members or any identifiable information.
  • Photos should not show your home address or a street name/number. Block out any license plate number.
  • The safest way to conduct the transaction is via email or an app that allows you to remain anonymous. You can create a free disposable e-mail account specifically for your online advertisement.
  • Resist requests to give out your phone number. If the buyer needs to talk to you, get their phone number and call them. Use the one-time caller ID block on your phone to keep the number private.

Meeting face-to-face:

  • For small items that are easily transported, arrange to meet in a public place at a time when there are plenty of people around. Bring someone with you – for added security and peace of mind. Meet where there are security cameras, people, and if possible, a security guard.
  • The City of Irvine has an E-Commerce Exchange Zone at police headquarters:

1 Civic Center Plaza
Irvine, CA 92606

Protect your home:

  • Your home is your safe space, and you should avoid inviting over people you do not know. However, if you are selling a large item, such as a couch, refrigerator, or TV set, there may not be an alternative.
  • Don’t be alone. When setting up the meeting, tell the potential buyer others will be there. For example, “I can meet you Sunday between 2 and 3 o’clock. I have friends visiting and there will be others coming to look at some things at that time.”
  • If you can get your item(s) outside, the buyer should not go inside the house — not even to use the bathroom.
