One of my most memorable experiences during my first year in Irvine was the first breathtaking view of the ocean on my way to a place called Laguna Beach. When I got there, I discovered that it is not only has the most beautiful beaches of Southern California (SoCal), but also that it is small and friendly town with many art galleries, musical concerts, and amazing restaurants.
I made several other visits to Laguna Beach and in each trip I learned more and more exciting things to do and to see there. It has now become a tradition to take friends that come to visit to enjoy a nice time in “Laguna.” With practice, I created a nice mental guide of where to take friends for a nice afternoon or night out. I would like to share some of the great activities I enjoy in Laguna Beach.
WHAT TO SEE:
When I bring friends to Laguna, we take a small walk around the city. I park near the Main Beach on Forest Ave. Parking is tricky especially during the summer, so be patient. And don’t worry about parking far – the walk will be nice!
Once parked, our walking tour starts on the small streets near the Main Beach. Forest Ave., Ocean Ave, Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), and all the way to Legion St. This will show the nice small city atmosphere of the small but delightful downtown commerce. Small businesses thrive here and shop owners are always happy to have customers to talk to.
From the Main Beach we head to Heisler Park, my favorite spot to “hang” in Laguna. Heiser Park has the most beautiful top-of-the-cliff beach view I’ve seen for SoCal. In the park you will find not only benches to enjoy the view and the sound of the ocean, but also barbecue grills to have a picnic.
WHAT TO DO:
Once we are done walking (and after going uphill and back from Heisler park, typically my party is a bit tired), we head out for a late lunch. I enjoy having drinks by the beach more than I enjoy the beach itself, so my favorite spot to spend a few hours is The Cliff, a restaurant on PCH near the Main Beach, opposite direction of Heisler Park.
The Cliff boasts an amazing view of the beach while you eat. While the food is not particularly mind-boggling, some of the things on the menu pretty good, like the steak nachos and the fish and chips. Make sure to not hurry and enjoy the food, the drinks, and the view.
AT NIGHT:
If I am bringing guests late or near sunset, I have some other spots that are also pretty amazing. One nice place to go for drinks at the sunset is the Rooftop Lounge. But beware, this place is always crowded. Get there early. I heard you can also make reservations, but I have never tried. Most likely you will be standing up while having your drinks. But the atmosphere is great, you meet some fun people, and enjoy a great sunset!
For after sunset, Laguna offers many of my favorite dinner spots. First there is K’ya Bistro. K’ya Bistro offers small plates of heaven, there’s really no going wrong here. It’s a great balance between gourmet food and price, though the small plates can get pricy quickly, so plan ahead. Also great for drinks and for bringing a big party. It’s a very lively place. It tends to be a bit loud, but it’s one of the reasons I like being there.
Another spot I really enjoy for dinner is the Brussels Bistro. It offers Begium(-like?) food, but there are great offerings on the menu to please all tastes. Mussels are endless on Mondays-Wednesdays. If you have been to Brussels, expect to have the same of their best street-food: french fries!
LATE AT NIGHT:
Going for a late night? Laguna Beach has some offerings too. My favorite spot for late night is The Sandpiper. The only place in all Orange County that I could find with live bands that play mostly reggae and rock. Everyday! If you like meeting new people, weekends are your best bet. If you just like music, drop by on a weekday. Just the locals, you, and a good band. The place is pretty small and may look a little shady, but don’t let looks fool you, it’s pretty great.
Another late spot is Hennessey’s, if you are looking for more of a pub type. Due to the great atmosphere of Laguna Beach with many locals, expect to meet some new people at the bar or just by casually chatting to someone eating something that looks delicious. Great drinks, good food, awesome company.
AND MORE!:
For some coffee, do not miss Laguna Coffee Co (with live music on Saturdays). And finally, to go out with a bang, make sure you drive up to Alta Laguna park (also known as “Top of the World”). I won’t try to explain this one, no words are fitting. Pick a clear day and you are set for a memorable view.
