Dear Student,
With the anticipation of more readings, assignments, and exams this quarter, it is also important to remember to make time for activities outside of your studies to practice work-life balance as a grad student. Whether you are interested in joining a student organization on campus or interested in volunteering your time in the community, having outside interests from your academic pursuits can positively impact your graduate school experience.
Getting Involved
Grad students play an active role in campus life by getting involved in clubs and organizations, including the Associated Graduate Students — UC Irvine’s officially recognized graduate student government. Your school or program may also offer student groups related to your field of study. Contact your school’s Graduate Student Affairs Office for information. If you live in graduate housing communities on campus, you can get involved with Residents’ Council or can attend events in the communities to meet your fellow residents.
Find something that fits your interest and schedule or do something with a group of friends. Do your research about different organizations – Attend a meeting or inquire with an existing member about the group. Consider the time commitment and if it fits comfortably within your other obligations as a student. It may take some time to find something that fits, but the great thing is that you can try different things.
Volunteering & Community Services
Get Connected! is a new UCI database for volunteer opportunities in the local area. Community organizations, students, faculty, and staff can use the website to find a match with agencies and causes that you can support. Otherwise, you can check out local chapters of community services organizations. Some may be on campus.
Outdoor Recreational Activities & Intramural Sports
As a grad student, you have access to the Anteater Recreation Center’s facilities. Health and wellness should be a top priority for grad students so take advantage of your access to develop healthy habits. The ARC offers a variety of recreation classes, outdoor activities and trips, and manages intramural sports. There is also a gym, pool, rock climbing wall, and an indoor track, all of which can be great study breaks.
