Networking is one of the most powerful tools for professional development. Not only does meeting new people expose you to influential leaders and potential mentors, it can also open countless doors of opportunities. So, whether you’re a rookie or a seasoned expert, you have to network. In this blog I am going to walk you through how effectively should you meet new people in your field and land a job. I am sure you have had many talks about using Linkedin, which is very important, but this blog is giving you an overview of how a networking can be done.
Joining a network on Linkedin:
The first step to networking is connecting with peers and the university networks. Although it might be tempting to join as many networks as you can, I would encourage you to choose wisely. Join the university’s network as long as they are relevant to you. Once you request to join a network, an administrator will have to approve your membership. This process wouldn’t take too long, and as soon as you’re accepted, you’ll have access to the networks discussions where important opportunities and announcements are posted.
How to actually use a Linkedin network?
Once becoming a member of a network, it is important to explore the perks that come along with it. Request to connect with your colleagues, send your classmates a message or leave them a comment on their entry. You can also browse through the profiles of your peers and see what are they up to. It is also important to note that, since you are member of a network, your entries will be showcased within the group, making it even more accessible to others and if you commented another person’s entry, chances are that they will return the same. This is most important because employers are often impressed by portfolios that have gained recognition from others. It is also important to look at profiles of the different people in you network. Connect with them and ask them for advice such as “how did you get to where you are today?” Also, keep in mind that professors are often included in your school’s network, take advantage of this to ask them for a letter of recommendation.
Conferences and talks:
In your life through school, I am sure you will get an opportunity to attend talks of researchers or attend a conference. All of the talks and conferences will often have a mixer during the event. Make sure you take most out of it. Go to people and start the conversation and get to know about their work. I would also recommend you to get their business cards. If you are attending a conference, make sure you have many copies of your resume and be ready to market yourself. Most of the conferences has attendance of the managers in your field. It would be really a good opportunity to explain your interests and get to know the expectations of managers in the industry.
Good luck!
