Come on, get off the couch, it’s time to start packing! I’m sure most of you have already decided what to take from home, and what you want to buy here in Irvine. It is a big responsibility; after all, you are shifting to a different continent! You will be setting up your new life here, and you will want to be prepared when it comes to packing. Here are a few tips that might make the task easier:
- The most important thing I can suggest is to check your airline’s luggage allowance, number of suitcases, the suitcase dimensions allowed by the airline, and carry-ons you are permitted to have. It will be difficult and upsetting to remove a few items at the airport in case the luggage is over the weight limit.
- Make sure you carry all your important documents in a sturdy folder that will not tear open. You can arrange the documents in order and make a list of what you are carrying and place it in the front of the folder so you know what document comes in order. You can place them in a transparent folder if you like. Double or even triple check this before leaving, as it will contain important documents like your I-20, passport, UCI confirmation letter, transcripts, and others. Keep a copy of these documents with you, and another back home.
- If you are bringing any food items, check the airline’s rules or security for the food items that are permitted into the United States. For security purposes, some items may not be allowed. With the permitted food items, you want to make sure they are carefully wrapped so that they do not spill into the suitcase and damage anything. I suggest you write down what the food item is and its ingredients as a label in English on the wrapping so that there is no confusion.
- It is understandable that everyone requires and will carry medicines from their home country. Please make sure you have a doctor’s prescription saying you are carrying these medicines. Make sure the note contains all the medicine names, given by a certified doctor. Also, you may keep another list of the same medicines, and explain which medicine is used to alleviate what issue. This may help you later in case you forget which one to take. Again, make sure this is written in English.
- When it comes to your carry-on bag, check the airlines rules about what you can carry in your bag, and what can be packed into your checked in suitcase. This includes sharp objects, lotions/creams, and any liquids.
- This is optional: Although you may have a credit card (international), it is wise to carry the currency (in cash) of the country you are leaving from, and the country you are entering, and any country you may have a lay-over at. You never know, you might have the need to use it!
- In each of your suitcases and carry-ons, keep a sheet of paper with your name in capital letters, and the address you will be staying at. Make sure it is in English and is legible.
- Make sure all your clothes, utensils, shoes and other items you are packing, are equally distributed in all suitcases. Do not pack only clothes in one bag and utensils in the other. Not only does it make one suitcase heavier, but if there is any delay in getting your luggage, you have some clothes to change into. Similarly, keep one change of clothes in your carry-on.
- You can download check lists for travel and keep a track of what you have packed and what needs to go into the bag! This is great to make sure you haven’t missed anything.
I hope you find these tips helpful. Happy packing!!
Good tips, Shreya!
Another thing to keep in mind is to keep your valuables with you at all times (things like laptop and important documents). I have heard many stories of people losing their suitcase, especially for international travels.
Great tips Shreya! I would also add, don’t forget to bring something that reminds you of home! I know its tempting to just pack clothes and food, and the necessities that you will need immediately when you get here, but after a week of so, once you’ve settled down, you will want to have a way of reconnecting back to your home. Whether it be a plush toy, a decoration, or your pillow, a taste of home will make the adjustment a lot easier! Have a safe flight/journey here everyone 🙂
