University of California, Irvine follows the quarter system similar to all other UCs. The quarter system usually consists of 10 weeks of instruction and a finals week. There are a number of courses offered by UCI and each course has a unique structure. For Eg. Some courses are only project based and your grade depends on the final project which you may or not be instructed to present, some are theoretical exam based which may comprise of one or more midterms and a final examination. Others consist of both projects and exams. Considering the short time span of the quarter system, students need to be on their toes at all times in order to get good grades.
Course details can be accessed through WebReg-Schedule of classes. Their results can be sorted based on your department viz; Computer Science, Biology etc. Once you select the department you can select quarter, course division, course types etc. and finally display the web results. The results will contain all the courses being offered in the specified department along with their respective course code, the name of the instructor, timings, date and time for the finals etc. One of the most important information that can be found includes maximum capacity, the number of students currently enrolled and waitlisted and whether the course is open or not. If the course is open, you can add it using WebReg, if it is waitlisted then you will be put on the waitlist which means you will be enrolled only if some enrolled student drops out of that course or the department decides to increase the class capacity. If the course is closed then you cannot enroll in it for the time being.
Before selecting a course, it is necessary to research about the curriculum of the course properly and it is advisable to choose the course only if you meet all the prerequisites otherwise you might face difficulties in understanding the course. Once the instruction begins you have a deadline of a few weeks usually two, to finalize the courses. These weeks must be utilized wisely by attending the classes of all the courses you are considering. But be sure to finalize all your classes before the deadline. UCI follows the deadlines very seriously and most of the departments do not allow any changes in the chosen courses ( adds/drops) after the deadline has passed. So, whether you like it or not you are stuck with your choices after that.
In order to perform well, it is important to follow course timeline very closely. Students must submit their projects, assignments, and homework on time as no extensions are allowed with the exception of emergencies. All submitted work is checked for plagiarism. Students can discuss among themselves, with the permission of the professors, but must submit their own work. If caught plagiarizing, the student will face serious repercussions as it is considered a very serious academic dishonesty.
It is important to attend all the classes although it is not mandatory except for a few. Attending a maximum number of classes is always beneficial and will help you understand the course well. Whenever you are facing problems in understanding your coursework, you can seek professional help. Don’t shy away from asking questions. You can clear your doubts before, during or after the class. You might also meet a Teaching Assistant during the office hours or fix an appointment with the instructor. In case you are not doing well you might ask for some extra help from your instructor, TA or your course peers. The environment at UCI is very friendly in that sense.
