As the new academic year begins, the campus also becomes more crowded than before. You might have found a study place for yourself in the last few weeks, but you might have found that there are other people in your study location! Well, don’t worry — I am here to point out some of the hidden gems on campus.
I wrote a few pros and cons about each of the places I have recommended here! But only you can work out which place is the best for you.
1: Bridge cafe https://ce.uci.edu/about/visit/cafe.aspx
The Bridge Cafe is located in the Continuing Education building, which is by Verano Housing area. They have a small Starbucks where you can get drinks or snacks, and there are tables with chairs or comfy sofas that anyone is welcome to use.
Pros
a) Easily accessible caffeinated beverages (important in graduate school)
b) Open space to relax and chat with others
Cons
a) It can be too windy sometimes
b) The cafe has regular opening hours, so while the tables and chairs might be available to use later, no drinks for you when the cafe’s closed
2: Reading Rooms in libraries. https://www.lib.uci.edu/study-space-locator
The link above will take you to a list of study spaces on the UCI library website. But I wanted to highlight some of the Reading Rooms that are available just for graduate students and faculty members. There is one in the Science Library and one in Langson Library which you can access only when you get your access card from the library’s front desk. Just ask the friendly staff in the library about the reading room access for graduate students. (Don’t forget to your student ID which will say ‘GRADUATE STUDENT’ on it)
Pros
a) It’s never crowded
b) Quiet study space without undergraduates
Cons
a) Closes when the library closes
b) Not the place for group work
3: Study rooms in Graduate Housing communities https://housing.uci.edu/communityLife/Facilities.html#pv
Did you know that there are study rooms and computer labs in your on-campus housing community? These facilities are only available for the residents of Verano or Palo Verde, with your house key. Follow the link and click on the relevant housing community for details.
Pros:
a) Available 24/7
b) Print services are also available
Cons:
a) I… can’t think of any!
Studying is important, but so is studying in the right place. Studying in the right place is important, but so is taking breaks and having fun!
