The first week of classes at UCI is considered Welcome Week. It is a chance to meet new people from all disciplines and have a good time. Everything is free for students so there is no excuse not to participate, especially because there is an activity for everyone. The hard part is keeping up with what is happening on which day and where to meet up. For this information, check out the associated graduate students website (https://www.ags.uci.edu/)
Every year, there is one day a hiking trip is planned. A meetup location is given and the group will either take a bus to the hike or walk to the hike. It is a fun time meeting new people and the hikes are meant for all levels. Plus, it’s a great opportunity to explore the area.
There is also a game night hosted at the associate graduate students office as well. Different board and card games are provided as well as snacks. No gaming experience is required and most likely no one will have played most of the games before. You might even find a new game you love playing.
This past year, a bowling night was also planned. Again, this event was free to students with a ride there and back. Students were given a lane and bowled for 2 hours with some food and drinks. This event changes every year so keep your eyes out for what is planned this year.
The final day of welcome week ends in a huge party outside the student food. As in most of these events, food is provided and is this case, so is wine and beer. They also hire a DJ who throws a great party. This event is normally the most attended as it is a huge celebration. Many upperclassmen attend as well as they enjoyed it the previous years. It’s a great time to meet people and hang out with friends you have made throughout the week.
Keep in mind this is only events sponsored by the associate graduate students. Each department will host its own activities from orientation to meet and greets. I recommend using a calendar to keep track of events you want to go to and where they are located. You can also follow associated graduate students on facebook to keep track of events (https://www.facebook.com/agsuci/).
The most important thing is to attend!!!! You only get one chance to make the most of welcome week so do everything you can while you have the opportunity.
