Living Canvas
The influence of art is really deep in Laguna Beach city, where there are numerous art galleries on every street and murals and sculptures on walls and corners. These murals and sculptures are static in that once they were made they’ve been exisiting. Not many people stop to absorb them, they aren’t providing an experience to people. My idea is to create a live canvas where the art will be designed on a prompt by the community in a routine event, perhaps every month or so. This art will live for the duration preceding the next community design event.
Out on the Town
Laguna Beach city has a strong traffic force. There are many pedestrians, but walkways accommodating them are far and few, whereas metered parking is abundant. Laguna has a very close and cozy vibe similar to European towns like Paris, Rome and Venice, however very few options capitalize on extending this experience. My idea is create a pilot program for the city to dedicate a few streets that will have no cars, but booths and tables for enjoying the space. Where restaurant vendors can extend their indoor seating to outdoor seating, other vendors can host crafts booths, painting classes, etc. that will make better use of the outdoor space Laguna has to offer and create more of immersive experience in the city. There are many large parking areas outside of the city center where the shuttles can run back and forth, free valet can also be an incentive to control the car congestion.
Surf Rack
Traffic congestion is really high in Laguna Beach city. Where bus stands and bike racks are far and few, which also adds to more bikes locked on poles.Surfing is a popular activity and is seen through many surf related sculptures and murals. My idea is to create more bike racks, while adding the artistic influence of Laguna Beach and make these an interactive experience rather than an eye sore. Each bike rack will look like a surf board where bikers can “plug-in” their bike. Every bike that is plugged in will add an effect. When the whole rack is full, all those individual effects will activate a larger effect adding a modern flair to the artistic vibe of Laguna Beach city, while creating delight for locals to use bikes.
