Migration, Exile and Displacement to/from Mexico
February 16-18, 2023

CALL FOR PROPOSALS

The Department of Spanish & Portuguese at UC Irvine and UC-Mexicanistas announces the twenty-seventh annual Mexican Studies Conference to be held on February 16-18, 2023. This conference brings together academics from Mexico, the U.S., and other parts of the world who are conducting research on related themes.

This year’s conference will provide a forum to address past and current representations of exile, displacement and migration, with emphasis given to various forms of transnational belonging and activism.

We encourage submissions from across disciplines, including but not limited to: literary, visual, media and performance studies, as well as religious studies, history, anthropology, political and social sciences.

We are particularly, but not exclusively, interested in papers or panels that address the following themes:

  • Exile, exodus, relocation
  • Migration routes and narratives
  • Forms of belonging and exclusion
  • Queer migration
  • Gender and mobility
  • Race and Ethnicity
  • Transnational art and activism
  • Colonialism, slavery and forced displacement
  • Illness, contagion, restricted movement
  • Translation, circulation, networks
  • Borders, both physical and conceptual
  • Diaspora, memory and identity

We will also consider papers or panels that explore other related themes in Mexican literature and culture.

Papers should be written in either Spanish or English. Presentations are limited to no more than 20 minutes (8 pages double-spaced). If you are interested in reading an original paper, please submit a 200-word abstract electronically by the deadline of November 14th, 2022. Proposals should be submitted via Google forms: Click HERE to submit your ABSTRACT. Include the following information: name of participant, telephone number, email, affiliation, academic status, title of the presentation, abstract and short-bio. If you have problems with the submission process, please email: ucimexconf@gmail.com

The selection committee will respond to all proposals by Friday, December 9, 2022.

REGISTRATION
This year’s conference fees will be:
$55 USD for students and independent scholars
$65 USD for faculty until January 15, 2023.
Afterward, the cost will be $65 and $75 respectively.

The Department of Spanish & Portuguese at U.C. Irvine and U.C. Mexicanistas announce the twenty-eight Mexican Studies Conference to be held on April 18-20, 2024. This conference brings together academics from Mexico, the U.S., and other parts of the world who are conducting research on related themes.


This year’s conference will provide a forum to address past and current representations of Care and Repair. We encourage submissions from across disciplines, including but not limited to literary, gender, visual, media and performance studies, as well as religious studies, history, anthropology, political and social sciences. We are particularly, but not exclusively, interested in papers or panels that address the following themes:

GUIDELINES

Papers and presentations for the conference may be in either Spanish or English. Presentations have a maximum length of 20 minutes, equivalent to approximately 8 double-spaced pages.

If you would like to present a proposal, please submit a 200-word abstract by the deadline of January 16, 2024. Abstracts should be submitted electronically via this Google Form: Click HERE to submit your ABSTRACT. The abstract submission should include: your name, telephone number, email, information about any required accommodations, academic status and affiliation, the title of your presentation, a 200-word abstract, and a short-bio. If you have problems with the submission process, please email: ucimexconf@gmail.com.
