Mexican Studies Conference

CALL FOR PAPERS
The Department of Spanish & Portuguese at U.C. Irvine and U.C. Mexicanistas announce the twenty-fifth annual Mexican Studies Conference to be held on May 2-4, 2019. This conference brings together academics from Mexico, the U.S., and other parts of the world who are conducting research on related themes. In its 25th anniversary, the conference will center on, but will not be limited to, poetic discourses that pertain to Mexican writers who emerged as poets in the 21st century. We aim to highlight the diversity of Mexican poetics by focusing on the following:
TOPICS
• Poetry in Indigenous languages and the adaptation or resistance to modern Western writing;
• Pastiche, parody, and textual interventions in relation to old or new documents;
• Violence, intertextuality, and the collective voice;
• Voices in ruins and devastation as recurring topics of hopelessness
• Representations of the lyric in narration, self-fiction, essays, and other genres.
One of our goals is to examine the most important emerging discourses of the 21st century as a way to look back and reevaluate how Mexican literature has evolved over the last two decades and throughout its history. Such topics will enable us to reflect on the state of poetic discourses in past and contemporary Mexican literature and develop new critical tools to approach new literary generations with a transhistorical perspective.
Keynote Speakers TBA.
