Who We Are

COMP Fellow

Sidhanth Raman is the COMP fellow for the 2023 spring quarter. He is a third-year graduate student working in geometry and topology. Outside of math, he enjoys playing music, cooking, and hiking.

Previous COMP Fellows

Deborah Tonne was the COMP fellow for the 2023 winter quarter. She is a graduate student working in applied mathematics.

Anubhav Nanavaty was the COMP fellow for the 2022 fall quarter. He is a third-year graduate student working in algebraic geometry. Apart for mathematics, he enjoys playing piano, watching Bollywood movies, and going for a run.

Kat Dover was the 2021-2022 COMP fellow. She is a sixth year grad student working on problems related to machine learning and probability. Outside of math, she enjoys baking, hiking, and watching movies with friends.

John Peca-Medlin was the 2020-2021 COMP Fellow. He completed his PhD in 2021 and is now the Richard Pierce Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Arizona.

COMP Founders

Kelly Isham was one of the co-founders of COMP and completed her PhD in 2021. She is now a visiting assistant professor at Colgate University.

Jesse Kreger was one of the co-founders of COMP and completed his PhD in 2021. He is now a postdoctoral research associate in the MacLean Lab at the University of Southern California.

Peer Mentors

Kevin Bui is a fourth-year graduate student. He enjoys math and programming. That’s why his research is in mathematical programming.

Jinghao Chen is a fourth year graduate student who is interested in numerical PDE and studying under John Lowengrub and Long Chen. Besides math, he enjoys hotpot parties and playing Texas Hold’em with other math students in the office. His favorite game is Zelda.

Matthew Cheung is a 5th year graduate student working on problems related to computing zeta functions of hypersurfaces over finite fields and currently studying under Professor Vladimir Baranovsky. Other than math, Matthew is interested in anime, Japanese food such as sushi and udon, and playing board games with friends.

David Clausen is a fifth year graduate student at UCI, studying differential topology. Besides math, he enjoys hosting dinner parties and listening to audiobooks on great figures of history.

Liam Hardiman is a fifth year grad student working on problems in graph theory and combinatorics. When he isn’t working on some math problem, he’s probably picking a lock, reading a book, or finally learning the piano for real this time.

Michael Hehmann is a fourth year graduate student working in mathematical logic. Specifically, he works on the application of model theory to additive combinatorics, Ramsey theory, and group theory. Outside of math he likes hanging out with friends, watching movies, playing basketball, and cats.

Omar Hurtado is a third year math student, interested in spectral theory problems coming out of physics. He’s fond of video games where you run away from boulders and cooking food that tastes okay enough.

Hua Lin is a fifth year graduate student studying analytic number theory. He enjoys watching and playing basketball, playing board games with friends and drinking good boba. He knows how to juggle and recently adopted a Venus Fly Trap.

Daniel Morrison is a fifth-year graduate student working in differential geometry. Hobbies include board games and video games, digital art, and reading about physics.

Jennifer Pi is a fourth-year graduate student, broadly interested in operator algebras and free probability. She’s open to chatting about lots of other math too, from dynamical systems to combinatorial games. Outside of mathematics, she enjoys reading a good book, playing (or watching) basketball, and failing to keep plants alive.

Ari Rosenfield is a third year graduate student, currently focused on category theory and noncommutative ring theory. For fun, she likes to do random art projects, play music, and go to the beach with her dogs.

Jessica Schirle is a fourth year graduate student studying under Isaac Goldbring. She has interests in model theory and is currently working on characterizing existentially closed universally free groups. Besides math, she’s active in her local church, tries to advocate for LGBTQ rights, plays a variety of puzzle games, and watches bad movies. She also really wants to find people who can lead belay so she can get back into climbing!

Alex Sutherland is a sixth year graduate student working on problems related to resolvent degree and uses tools from algebraic geometry and topology. In his free time, Alex enjoys listening to and playing games with friends.

Dong Yan is a fifth year graduate student who is interested in numerical PDE and studying under professor Patrick Guidotti. In her spare time, she enjoys playing moba games. Recently, she is taking after her friend’s cat Chestnut.

Lili Yan is a sixth year graduate student. She works on inverse problems. Outside of math she enjoys photography.

Maureen Zhang is a third year graduate student at UCI. She is interested in algebra, and enjoys reading, walking and swimming.
