General guidelines for a successful tutoring session:

  • Come prepared with specific questions. Instead of “I don’t understand El Nino”, rather “Can you please explain what happens to the ocean circulation during El Nino?”
  • Provide me (your tutor) with course materials you are using BEFORE our meeting. It helps me understand exactly what has been distributed to your during class and/or allows me to determine a different method to instruct.
  • If possible, provide me (your tutor) which concepts/topics you need assistance with BEFORE our meeting.  This gives me time to think about the concept and ensure I have time to practice the best teaching strategy for that topic (*Not all topics are fresh on my brain, and just like you it helps to have a refresher before I head into a tutoring session!*)
I was awarded the “Most Promising Future Faculty” award in April 2019 at the Celebration of Teaching Awards at UC Irvine.
