Orange County Water District (OCWD) is responsible for managing the vast groundwater basin that provides most of northern and central Orange County’s drinking water. This agency tests the groundwater regularly for PFAS, and is working with local water suppliers to develop new groundwater treatment facilities for removing PFAS, which will allow affected wells that have been shut down to be put back into operation. More information about OCWD’s PFAS response is available here.

The C8 Science Panel studies (or “C8 Studies”) were landmark research studies on perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) exposure and health outcomes in Ohio and West Virginia. Those studies and their main findings are described here.

The U.S. Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) recently reviewed the scientific evidence about PFAS exposure and health, and is now conducting new studies on PFAS exposure and health outcomes in a variety of communities around the U.S.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) develops water testing methods, sets rules for monitoring water contaminants and issuing health advisories, and supports states, tribes, and local communities in addressing PFAS and other environmental challenges. EPA’s PFAS activities are summarized here.

The California Water Boards oversee PFAS water supply monitoring in our state, providing publicly available data and mapping tools with the results.

UCI scientists have been actively researching PFAS exposures and health effects for over 15 years. Some of our major contributions include historical fate and transport modeling and exposure reconstruction for the C8 Studies, epidemiological analyses of PFAS exposure and health effects, and development of mathematical models relating PFAS water concentrations to expected blood levels. Our scientific publications on PFAS and other topics are listed here for Dr. Bartell, here for Dr. Detwiler, and here for Dr. Vieira.
