Why is the Body Attacking Itself?

The body’s immune system is a network of tissues and organs working together to fight off foreign agents from entering the body. This defense system is what prevents illnesses and disease. However, what happens when that defense system starts attacking healthy cells? This is what is known as an autoimmune reaction.

What is an Autoimmune Disease ?

An autoimmune disease is a condition in which the body’s natural defense system fails to differentiate healthy cells and foreign cells, causing the body to mistakenly attack normal cells, resulting in an immune response. There are over 80 different types of autoimmune chronic diseases all which range from mild to severe depending on the individual. There is no known reason why the body responds the way it does; however those diagnosed with autoimmune disease can have difficulty performing daily tasks and struggle with mental health.

What are some notable examples of autoimmune diseases ?

Psoriasis, a condition marked by thick, scaly patches of skin

Lupus, a disease that inflames all areas of the body that include joints, skin and organs

Graves Disease -the overproduction of thyroid hormones (hyperthyroidism).

Common Symptoms of Autoimmune Diseases

Symptoms that are associated with autoimmune disease are not just a black/white, matter many cases those diagnosed with an autoimmune disease can experience a spectrum of indications

Some common examples are:

  • Fatigue
  • Joint pain and swelling
  • Skin problems
  • Abdominal pain or digestive issues

Risk Factors

There aren’t any factors that directly cause autoimmune disease, however those who have gotten an infection or a serious injury are more likely to be prone.

Some risk factors would be:

  • Genetics
  • Weight
  • Smoking:
  • Medication
  • Gender: women

Preventative Measures

Autoimmune diseases can occur at any point in life and the exact cause has not been identified; however its risk can be reduced with these measures.

  1. Receive Annual Checkups and Exams- annual screenings of CRP (C- reactive protein) or CBC with WBC differential can help detect and treat autoimmune diseases earlier
  1. Do not downplay any signs of pain – the first signs of autoimmune disease tend to be sudden joint pain so always question and consult a medical expert.
  1. Manage Stress Levels- stress is a key in the immune system so lowering levels of stress through meditation or yoga is highly beneficial
