Our Initiatives
Doctoral Student Mentoring Program
A central focus of the School of Education’s DECADE group is creating a welcoming and supportive community. We focus on matching all incoming doctoral students with a peer mentor to foster a positive transition into the program and beyond.
DECADE Team Drive
The DECADE Education Graduate Student Resources Team Drive for doctoral students by doctoral students. There’s academic and non-academic resources to support your success throughout the program. Doctoral students can find folders with milestone examples, a lending library, and non-academic resources like how to get free parking and student discount information. Contact Jenell Krishnan (jakrishn@uci.edu) or Daniela Alvarez-Vargas (Dalvare5@uci.edu) with your ideas!
Cross-Cohort Conversations Workshop Series
Cross-Cohort Conversations is a quarterly workshop series aimed to support the completion of program milestones for doctoral students. These workshops focus on the exchange of knowledge between cohorts aiming to provide honest, concrete, and relevant guidance. We want to promote a stronger community built on open communication cross-cohort mentorship. If you want to be a panelist, contact Nestor Tulagan (ntulagan@uci.edu, Room 3381) or Jennifer Renick (jrenick@uci.edu, Room 2435).
Community Building
Through facilitating community building activities during meetings as well as coordinating student participation in volunteer opportunities and social justice events, DECADE seeks to foster a sense of community for students passionate about equity with activities both inside and outside of campus. This work is continuing to grow so if you’d like be involved or share an idea, please contact Jennifer Renick (jrenick@uci.edu, Room 2435)!
Higher Education Outreach Team
We provide workshops and resources to undergraduate and high school students related to different topics in higher education. Our topics include college access, research involvement, and professional development.
Community Outreach Committee
The mission of the Community Outreach Committee is to bridge the gap between institutions of higher education and the community. We do this by 1) developing relationships with local community members and groups 2) listening to their needs and goals, and 3) providing them with the supports they need to access, navigate, and succeed in higher education.
