Multidisciplinary Design Program
We invite you to apply to the Multidisciplinary Design Program (MDP) at the University of California, Irvine. A collaboration between the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2) and the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP), the MDP will engage UCI undergraduate students from all disciplines in design teams co-mentored by at least two faculty members from different Schools. The MDP allows students to develop the multidisciplinary skills and knowledge that will advantage them in their graduate studies or careers that demand collaborative design across disciplines.
We encourage you to review the 25 projects available, and submit your application online at the UROP Web site by Friday, February 3, 2012.
Selected by the mentors, the multidisciplinary teams will develop a project design by the end of Spring Quarter 2012. Each team will submit an itemized budget. Calit2 will provide 2:1 funding, supplying two-thirds of the funding of up to $3,000 (project expenses only) to match one-third from other sources (e.g., UROP, faculty grants, or students’ personal funds). Working and meeting space will be made available on the second floor of the Calit2 Building. The mentors may provide additional space.
MDP Fellows also will be invited to participate in various workshops on project management, team building, conflict resolution, and other activities to ensure each team’s success and enrich participants’ overall experience. Students will receive academic credit through courses with the instructor designated as their faculty mentor. Students who are currently conducting faculty-mentored undergraduate research or creative projects are encouraged to apply, as their schedules allow and upon approval of their mentors.

UROP Spring Call for Proposals
We are pleased to announce the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) Spring Call for Proposals. UCI undergraduates from all disciplines who are conducting research projects or creative activities under the guidance of UCI faculty are encouraged to apply.
The research proposal should include background and objective of the research project, project design and feasibility, student’s specific responsibility, project’s timeline, and a detailed budget with justification. In addition, faculty mentors will be asked to upload one letter of recommendation per project, which would evaluate the student’s performance to date and capacity to complete the proposed activities. If the research involves human subjects or the use of live vertebrate animals, the appropriate IRB or IACUC protocol number is required. Complete proposals must be submitted online at the UROP Web site (http://www.urop.uci.edu/grants.html), by Monday, May 16, 2011.
Proposals will be reviewed by the UROP Faculty Advisory Board. Standards for evaluation of funding requests include:
-Intellectual merit in the student’s proposed research activity
-Thoroughness and completeness of the proposal packet
-Level of commitment and support from the faculty
-Assessment of student’s UCI transcript
-Available Funds
UROP will fund a varied set of projects, with requests up to $1,000 for individual projects, where average amount of funding has been close to $500. For group proposals that involve multiple students, requests can be for up to $2,500, where the average amount of funding has been close to $1,200. Funds can be used to support such expenditures as the purchase of materials and supplies, research-related travel, and the costs incurred in the presentation of research or creative activities. These funds cannot support major hardware purchases, salaries or stipends, or travel expenditures only.
Proposals requiring no funding, or receiving adequate funding from departmental or other sources, may be submitted for a UROP Honorary
Fellowship.

UROP Volunteer Information
I am grateful for your willingness to volunteer and deliver the best-ever UCI Undergraduate Research Symposium. Please find below information regarding the event, duties and expectations of the volunteers.
Our collective job is to celebrate with the presenters and their faculty mentors, family members, and guests, their accomplishments. We are there at their service and to make the Symposium the most enjoyable experience they would have at UCI.
To deliver on our commitments and promise, we will be organized into three teams: Registration, Floaters, and Room Monitors. Team leaders will work closely with you to address your questions and support your role.
What is expected?
- By order of preference, express interest in team(s) you would like to join. General team duties are attached for your review.
- You can volunteer all day (per schedule below), or work in one of two shifts: Morning (6:15 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.), or Afternoon (11:45 a.m. – 5:45 p.m.).
- Please attend two volunteer training meetings, scheduled on: Wednesday (May 4th) from 3-5:00 p.m. , Thursday (May 5th) from 3:00-5:00 p.m., Tuesday (May 10th) from 4-6:00 p.m. AND Wednesday (May 11th) from 4-6:00 p.m. All meetings will be held in Student Services II, Classroom 1010 A/B. Once you are assigned to a team, please coordinate your attendance with the team leader assigned to working with you.

UROP Symposium
You are cordially invited to join us at the Eighteenth Annual UCI Undergraduate Research Symposium on Saturday, May 14, 2011, in the Humanities Buildings. This stimulating day-long event provides an excellent opportunity for you, UCI faculty and staff, parents, alumni, members of the media, and the outside community to participate actively in communicating about research and creative activities in all academic fields. The Symposium gives students a rich experience in the presentation aspect of the research process through their oral and/or poster presentations and discussions.
We encourage you to make a presentation at the Symposium or to attend and learn about the research endeavors of your fellow undergraduates.
