Here Comes the End of Winter!

With the opening of a new round of course registration and the arrival of final exams, I realized that my university life has almost passed two quarters! How time flies! My life at UCI has really made me improve in many aspects, which makes me exciting. One of the aspects is that I gradually start planning for the future, such as the upcoming spring quarter and summer.

One of the most important things in my spring plan is to complete three courses. Then as a result, at the end of the spring semester, I could have the chance to transfer to the department I prefer, which I am very much looking forward to. However, at the same time, I have to say goodbye to the U/U department that be with me for a year, which also makes me sad. Over the past two quarters, the U/U department has been very helpful to my university life, not only for course selection and future planning but also gave me a lot of help in daily life and part-time work. While the grateful thing is that I successfully applied for the discussion leader of the University Study course, my fate with the U/U department does not seem to be completely over! I am so excited to have the opportunity to help as many college freshmen as I’ve had before, which leads to the second thing I will be doing in the spring quarter – training to become a qualified discussion leader. I hope to meet more new friends and exercise my leadership skills through this opportunity. I think my leadership and public speaking skills need to be improved. The third thing is to keep sticking to the Zotblog program. After becoming a zotblogger, I feel like I was less afraid of writing, and writing even become a part of my daily life. Zotblog has become a way of recording my life this year, and it has preserved my wonderful study abroad life very well. Writing on different topics also gave me more observations, and motivate me to move forward, discover and participate in the novel activities. The last thing I plan to do in the spring is the English Conversation Program because I want to develop my speaking skills. The language used in daily life is completely different from the language in books, I want to learn language from English-speakers by communicating with them.

It looks like I will be busy with my spring! I hope I can successfully finish my winter quarter and then complete these plans in my spring quarter!

Finally, I wish you all the best of luck in the upcoming final exams!

What is in my BRAIN?

Hello everyone! This is my “brain”! It consists of five parts, all of which are very important to me, and together they make me. I will introduce you to each of these parts in sequence in the following paragraphs.

Family & Friends:
This part satisfies more emotional needs. We need to share happiness or sadness with other people, which can be a good way to relieve stress or gain happiness. I love doing activities together with others – reviewing for exams or celebrating holidays.

Study & Work:
This part of the study is made up of lectures and assignments. This is where I store all the knowledge and skills I learned in the UCI courses. In addition, after entering the university, all the study time needs to be arranged and planned by myself, which has fully exercised my time management, which is also a very important part of the study. Work mainly refers to other important tasks other than learning tasks, such as Zotblog preparing and future participant applications and plans making as a Zotblogger.

Delicious Foods:
Foods and drinks are basic needs for not only living but also enjoyments. Having delicious food is always a great way to de-stress, whether watching a movie or enjoying it with friends and family while enjoying food, I love both! People will always restrict their diet for a variety of reasons including weight loss. High-calorie food like ramen, ice cream, fried chicken, Szechuan dishes, boba tea… I would say just forget the calories and celebrate your happiness!

Hobbies:
If I can no more concentrate on studying and need some relaxation, or simply have some extra time, then I will spend them on my hobbies. The hobbies I choose to spend time on change over time. My favorite hobbies lately are playing badminton and playing various board games.

Travel:
I am always ready for travelings – China, U.S., Canada… I am already preparing for this summer vacation, but due to the restrictions of the epidemic, I don’t know if I can actually do it. New environment, new culture, new friends, how exciting!

Figure Skating, Yuzuru Hanyu

By chance, I saw a piece of Yuzuru Hanyu’s figure skating performance on the Internet, but it shocked me in just a few minutes. I was very impressed with that performance. His emotional performance and heartwarming smile, as well as the scene where he bowed his head and kissed the ice surface during the performance, were deeply engraved in my mind.

The first Hanyu’s performance I saw

So I started learning about figure skating. I learned later that it wasn’t even a game, but an earthquake condolence show. The difference between figure skating and running or speed skating is that it is more about competing with yourself and about individual performance. I seriously studied the grading scale of figure skating and watched many competitions. I even feel like I’m taking a class seriously!

In the process of learning, I learned that athletes themselves, regardless of nationality or origin, should be recognized for their own efforts and perseverance, while Yuzuru Hanyu is a very respectable athlete in figure skating. Rather than retiring honorably after winning two consecutive Olympics and Grand Slams, he chose to continue to fight in the international arena. Regardless of the pain and public opinion, he continued to struggle with his dreams and hard work, surpassing himself, surpassing his dreams, and moving forward on the road of surpassing the record of mankind. It is gratifying that he successfully broke through himself at the Beijing Winter Olympics and completed the 4A in the world’s first international competition, which is a brand new milestone in the history of human figure skating.

Congenital asthma, earthquake destroyed his home, be given the cold shoulder at the beginning of success… Only Yuzuru knows all the hardships he has suffered, which finally created a unique unparalleled world champion in the history of figure skating. When I feel down and want to give up, I will think of Yuzuru Hanyu who was once abandoned by the world. With his own strength, he won the affirmation of everyone at the end. From the few audiences at the beginning, to the pooh rain and deafening cheers that fill the rink at the end of each performance, Yuzuru Hanyu proves that anything is possible. His perseverance has given countless people the motivation to continue to work hard, and it has also made me take my life and study more seriously and make efforts more proactively than before.

I hope one day I can participate in a performance by Yuzuru. Although we do not know if he will choose to retire after the Beijing Olympics, I still want to see him showing on the ice with his best performance.

Training before the Winter Olympics in Beijing

4A successfully dropped the ice for the first time at the All-Japan Championship

Note:

Yuzuru Hanyu is the first man in the history of figure skating to win the Junior Division (JWC, JGPF) and Senior Major Grand Slam (SUPER SLAM). It is also after the ISU Judging System replaced the original 6.0 scoring system in 2004, and before the new scoring rules were adopted on July 1, 2018, during this period, the short program, free skating, and total score of the adult group were All world record holders. Hanyu has broken world records for the short program, free skating, and total score 19 times, and is the first player to be certified by ISU to jump out of the 4Lo (quadruple Loop jump) and 4A (quadruple Axel jump).

Tension and Relaxation go hand in hand

The time passed much faster than I thought! The winter semester has just started, and the mid-term exam is coming soon. Is everyone busy preparing for the mid-term exam? My class had a later midterm than my friends, but that meant there was more material on the exam! In addition, I have to prepare for the career fair, and the time for mid-term review becomes very tight. Thus, in this busy period of time, how to effectively relax has become a very important thing. I’m going to share with you what I do to relax.

I like to listen to something on the way to the library or study room because it takes up so much time with assignments, revision tasks, and daily activities. Sometimes I listen to some music, but more often I listen to books. If you have any favorite songs can recommend to me, I can enrich my playlist. What I would like to introduce to you here is listening to books. I have listened to crosstalk and pingshu (storytelling), which are ancient traditional Chinese oral performance art forms. Crosstalk mainly tells funny jokes and recent news, while pingshu tells stories about ancient Chinese novels and books. Since I always use my mobile phone and computer a lot, listening to something can also relax my eyes, which is killing two birds with one stone. In addition, I also like to chat with my friends to relax. Although the epidemic can be scary at times, technology is now so advanced that people can communicate without leaving their homes. It is also a good way to share with your friends the recent daily events or difficulties you have encountered. Having a call or Facetime with a friend is a great way to relieve stress and stay social while not being affected by the pandemic.

I hope you will not be discouraged when you are under too much pressure and relax by doing what you enjoy. Combining work and rest will get twice the result with half the effort. For the upcoming midterm exam, I hope all students can be fully prepared and achieve excellent results.

Winter… New Quarter!

In the fall of 2021, I came to UCI, the big family I will live in for four years. Everything is new and attractive, but also confusing. After a quarter of exploring the campus and adapting to the courses’ tempo, I feel more confident about my life in Winter 2022. Instead, I lost a lot of opportunities to make new friends when in-person classes went online because of COVID-19. Now I just hope that the epidemic will get better soon.

In the fall quarter of 2021, my grades did not reach my expectations, which even made me doubt my decision on the future major for a period of time. However, I choose to stick to my belief that one failure is not enough to deny me, and I will work harder to prove myself in the following quarter. I plan to make appropriate time management and schedule for my life in winter to improve my efficiency. I think one of my biggest problems in the fall is that I did not properly adapt to the pace of life and reasonably plan my own time. In the winter quarter, I will make my life more fulfilling and compact through a more reasonable planning schedule.

I am a person who likes to concentrate on studying in the evening, but due to the covid and other reasons, I am trying to change my living schedule. In my previous blog, I introduced my favorite place, The Court, which is a large, 24/7 study room that provides a great place for me to study at night. But because of COVID-19, its opening hours were shortened dramatically so I have not been there since the start of the winter term. Therefore, I adjusted my study from evening to the daytime, and fortunately, I have adapted to it well so far. I hope I can continue this well-maintained daily routine all along this quarter.

To my great delight, the start of the winter quarter has been perfect for me. It even surprised me, except in the case of the more severe spread of COVID-19. I am so glad that I can choose all the courses that I want most, and even the professors that I want most in these courses. The course selection and planning that began at the fall quarter made me somewhat prepared, but the fierce competition in winter caught me off guard. Fortunately, the final result is satisfactory, and I also hope to get good grades in these courses in the following study.

Finally, I hope that all UCI students and staff be healthy and safe through the new quarter without being harmed by COVID-19.

A new self-study area just discovered last week… Love it!
