A Letter to Myself Ten Weeks Ago

This week is the tenth week of my college life, and there is only one weekend and the final week left in my quarter. During these ten weeks, I lived a relatively abundant life and adapted to life in college. In the following part, I will briefly introduce my feelings and what I think is useful for freshmen.

Ten weeks ago, I had no idea what college was like. Have a problem to ask elder sister, but afraid of causing trouble to others. As an international student, I was quite different from my local friends. Not only in language, but also in living habits and cultural differences, I was very nervous. I always worry about what others think of me or do things that are impolite to others, so I only limit myself to getting to know Chinese people socially. But thanks to some Chinese friends in my writing and reading classes, I gradually got used to living here.

In retrospect, I think my worries were quite legitimate. Most people take some time to get used to a new environment when they first move into it. It is not a very difficult thing, but we need to take the initiative to learn and accept the new life. I now wish I had been more proactive and met more friends instead of worrying about what others thought of me. In addition, I sometimes ignore some emails or notifications due to language problems. Thus, I think we should remind each other with our friends to avoid some unnecessary trouble (such as course-dropping and choosing). As students, we continue our learning career in university. Learning is of course important and should not be taken lightly, but university is also the epitome of society, an important dividing line for us to transition from youth to adulthood, and the best “internship” before we enter society. Therefore, in addition to continuing our academic life, we should also learn to balance the relationship between study and life and pay attention to time management. After I came to university, I no longer had teachers or parents around to supervise my study and care about my life. Therefore, one of the problems I faced at the very beginning was that I could not arrange my time properly. I’ve come to find that organizing a schedule or task list is a very effective way to do it.

I hope that new students reading this blog can learn a little bit about college life so that they are able to be better prepared for college life. Thank you very much for reading and wish you a happy life and every success you desire!

Horror Night in Mesa Court!

In this blog, I will share with you an activity that I enjoyed very much at UCI. It’s called Peter’s Pumpkin Patch, and it is a Halloween event hosted by Mesa Court. This was my first Halloween here, so it impressed me.

Since I had a long talk with my mentor that day, the activity had already begun when I arrived at the site, and people were already participating in various projects on the Upper Mesa Lawn. The sunset glow on the lawn showed me a wonderful view. DJs danced with the music next to a white inflatable ghost, getting the party on fire. The long tables and chairs and even the lawn were filled with people. Everyone was in high spirits, and I especially liked the lively festive atmosphere. My favorite parts of the party are the Costume Contest and Pumpkin Painting. In Costume Contest, people dress up as their favorite characters, and there are even a lot of males played female roles. All kinds of costumes and people cosplaying make us so enthusiastic. In the competition, under the guidance of the host, the participants walked the red carpet to show off their Halloween costumes. Pumpkin Painting, another event I attended with my friends, was also very interesting. In this event, people are given small pumpkins, which are about the size of the palm of a hand to paint on. My friend is very good at painting. She painted pumpkins into her favorite anime character, which was extremely cute. However, I would recommend you bring your own paint and brushes if it is possible because the pens provided by the activity are a little thicker, which makes drawing more difficult. Fortunately, the final product was quite satisfactory!

I recommend that all students especially freshmen to attend this event. It is a great opportunity to meet new friends and take a break from the heavy stress of study. Just go and have a fun evening with your friends! In addition, if you go to dinner after the event, The Anteatery may also be filled with people in various costumes. Ask them to take a photo together then!

Suitable Study Rooms in Mesa Court

The last two weeks are mid-term weeks, and students are reviewing for various exams carefully. I was also struggling with homework and exams, so I found several great places to study.

The libraries are definitely the best place with an academic atmosphere, such as Langson Library and Science Library. However, I am a person who likes to study at night, while the libraries are either a little bit further away from me (I don’t like to walk by myself at night) or close at 11 pm (sometimes it even closes as early as five), so I chose to find other places that were more suitable for my study. I live in MC, so the places I am going to recommend to you today are Mesa Court study rooms.

The study rooms at Mesa Court are divided into three areas: The Court, Conejo, and Community Center. The Court is located directly opposite The MC Mail Room, which is a spacious and bright 24h large self-study room with various seats to choose from. It also includes two private study rooms that need to be reserved, and one large room for discussion (no reservation required). Conejo is located diagonally opposite the Mail Room and contains only two private study rooms. These rooms here are slightly larger than those of the Court. Furthermore, students who live in MC but are far from Tower Buildings can go to Community Center, which is a self-study room located in the north of MC. Community Center consists of a public study room and three very large private study rooms, which are the largest private study rooms in the three sites.

All private study rooms are available from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., and each person can only make a reservation for two hours per day. While two people can book for four hours, which means you can call your friends and book a room to study together for a longer time. Compared with the Court and Conejo, there are fewer people that reserve in Community Center, so if you want to use the room immediately, the community Center will be a better choice.

I like to study in The Court room or book a study room in Conejo with my friends to review for exams together. The public self-study room of The Court is 24h, so students who like to study during the nighttime but have no place to go can come to the large self-study room of The Court. Since the study room is in the center of Mesa Court and needs to use the MC plastic card to enter, it is also very safe for students.

In the end, I wish everyone can successfully spend the mid-term weeks and achieve satisfactory grades!

Life in Different Universities (1)

Hello everyone, I am Lucy. Apart from the introduction, this is my first blog in the true sense. I am very honored to be one of UCI’s ZOT bloggers and share my life here as an international student.

What I want to share with you this week is a comparison between my study abroad life and that of one of my best friends in England. In the following introduction, I will call my friend Yvonne and will not mention her school. All the introductions are our personal feelings.

Because of the epidemic, students who want to study abroad often choose to apply to many universities in many countries, and we are also in the same situation. For universities in different countries, people are concerned about both study and life living. The study part includes the semester course system, as well as the study pressure, and I will only focus on studying in this blog.

The first is learning. The semester system of UC is different from that of other Universities in the United States. We have a quarter system, and the pace is relatively fast. People often undergo midterms mysteriously in the second or third week of the quarter. As for myself, I have four courses this quarter, and I have had at least one exam every week since the second week. In addition, I will have at least three days when work is due every week and at least ten assignments due every week. It is the first time for me to contact this fast pace, so I feel a lot of study pressure. On the other hand, my friend Yvonne’s study at a British university is a little different from mine. There are also three semesters in Yvonne’s college year, which are term1, 2, and 3, but the tasks for these three terms are different. The first and second terms are mainly for classes and daily assignments (accounting for 0-30% of the total academic year grade), while the third term is mainly for exams (accounting for 0-30% of the total academic year grade). Therefore, the study pressure in the first two terms will be slightly lower. Due to the epidemic, most courses in British universities are online, which are divided into online pre-recorded lectures and live lectures, where UCI has many in-person courses, especially for the freshman.

I will introduce the differences in life between UCI and University in England in my next blog post. Meanwhile, if you want to know more about college life in different places during the pandemic, you are more than welcome to contact me~

Meet Lucy: Your 2021-2022 ZotBlogger

My name is Jiajie Chen, you can call me Lucy, I’m from Qingdao, China and I live in campus now. I still do not have a major yet, but I’m intending to major in psychology.

I am interested in sketching, diving, and traveling. I enjoy watching movies or playing video games with my friends in my spare time. But I rarely watch horror movies… Some of them are horrible to me…

My first day at the university was like, this is huge! Then I had to drag three heavy boxes and a big bag for an hour to get to my dormitory and start to unbox my packages. This was all after I took about twenty hours of plane. Therefore, my first impression was that I was deadly tired.

However, when I start my campus life, this land, where I am going to live in for four years became lovely. I have now finished my first week at school. My professors are very kind, so I am very confident about my future study. Even I’m still not quite used to the life here yet, but I guess it will not be far.

During last summer vacation, I take a bunch of classes to learn how to drive. I also had a wonderful time with my friends traveling Shanghai. After this trip, I fell in love with Shanghai. It is gorgeous and I hope to live there one day.

My new goal is to be more committed to what I am doing, be more enthusiastic to my life, and hope to get good grades!
