Hunger Cues

Feed me before I start crying. I may…

  • Open my mouth
  • Suck on my hand
  • Look toward or turn my head towards my caregiver
  • Put my hand on my stomach
  • Whine or fuss
  • Beat my arms over my head
  • Move my arms and legs towards caregiver or food
  • (Older) Vocalize

When I am hungry, my arms are flexed and hands are grasped under the chin

Fullness Cues

If bottle feeding, don’t make me finish the bottle if I’m full. When I am full, I will…

  • Stop sucking
  • Let go of the nipple
  • Close my mouth or tighten my lips
  • Relax my tone and open hands
  • Look away or turn my head away from my caregiver
  • Seem drowsy, yawn, or rub my eyes
  • (Older) Gesture to refuse food, arch my back, push or crawl away

When I am full, I will extend my arms and legs and slow my sucking.
