Homework for Ch1 & Ch2 is now open on Sapling. The assignments will remain open until 8:00 AM on the day of our midterm (July 14).
The activities handout for Friday is up.
Bring the new class activities handout to class tomorrow. Paper or digital is fine.
Remember, I’m keeping an eye out for questions on Piazza. As you work through the material in Ch 1, please post questions. I will use your questions to help decide what topics will get the most focus in class tomorrow.
Bring the class activities handout to class on Monday (digital copy ok).
I made a class intro video for you!
Welcome to Chem 51A! I am in the process of updating the class website and syllabus, but you can still find relevant information here. On the right of every page of the website you will see a class calendar. The general chapter dates, quiz dates, and exam dates can be found there. It is a publicly accessible Google calendar, so you may subscribe to it if you wish. Note that there are no make-up exams or quizzes, so clear your schedule now! Check out the FAQ page for answers to common questions. Here is some additional helpful information.
Organic Chemistry by Smith, 4th ed. (OK to use 3rd ed!)
Sapling Learning (not available yet)
We’ll be using iClicker 2. If you don’t have one and don’t want to buy one but still want to participate, I will be enabling use of iClickerGo for our class. Note that there is no guarantee that you will be able to use iClickerGo in other classes. Using an iClicker is optional but recommended. A small amount of extra credit will be available for using iClickers. There are other ways to earn the same extra credit if you strongly object to using an iClicker.
We will be using Piazza as a free online class discussion forum. This is optional but recommended. Because summer classes move very quickly, you will often find it helpful to communicate and ask for help outside of class time. Piazza is an excellent tool for this! I’m opening it up this weekend, so go ahead and check it out! I added a few polls that you can take to get things started.
There are many topics from general chemistry that you will need to know for organic chemistry. You should review these topics as soon as possible, preferably before class begins. You can find a list of topics on the Lecture Materials page of this website.
FINAL EXAM IS WEDNESDAY, 9:00 AM, BS3 1200!
We will start promptly at 9, so don’t be late. Remember to bring your ID, something to write with, and your model kit in a CLEAR PLASTIC CONTAINER!
Remember that sitting in the wrong seat without approval = zero on final exam. The seating chart will be posted on the lecture hall doors at ~ 8:45 AM.
Extra Credit Info
You still have an opportunity to earn extra credit by filling out the end of class survey that WenLiang has been emailing links to! The survey closes tomorrow morning, so do it tonight. Here are the possible overall extra credit allotments.
You can only earn a maximum of 5% extra credit toward your overall class grade. I will decide letter grade cutoffs first based on overall scores. THEN I will add any extra credit you earned, so extra credit DOES NOT AFFECT THE CURVE. You will be able to see everything in the class gradebook once everything is complete.
I’ll be in my office today until 4. Drop in if you have questions.
