FSAE Electric Vehicle THOR’s New Electrical System

screen-shot-2016-10-27-at-11-11-29-am

The past few weeks, the team had been working on wiring the electrical systems for racecar, “Thor”. This had been a major repeated issue for many years, and we hope to solve our issues with our car’s electrical systems this year.

We had also drew the wiring diagram for the low voltage box. In previous years, a graduated graduate student built an electric racecar called Epsilon. Though it was only for a project, and therefore not built with the FSAE regulations in mind, it still serves as a good example for us to base Thor’s electrical system off of. One of them was the driver’s display. This tells us the car’s speed and voltage in the battery. We have planned for Thor to have an identical system to simplify things.

Our battery boxes are also in development, though only existing as Solidworks constructs at the moment. We have planned on constructing them out of steel, and welding the corners together. Last year, they were two separate boxes, and fitted together with rivets. The problem was that this was extremely time consuming, and also horrendously heavy. By only using one box, we simplify construction, and also allowing us to store the batteries in the back. This should hopefully shorten the car a bit, though center of gravity may still be an issue. Welding is also a lot quicker that using a few hundred rivets. These boxes need to withstand a lot of force, up to 40Gs in some places.

These, of course, are going to be used to power our electric motors, which have been supposedly taken from a golf cart. We geared it down slightly, in order to provide more torque at the beginning at the cost of limiting our top speed. However, we have observed from last year that we are unlikely to reach that high of a speed anyways.

Huh, I ramble a lot when I get going. Good night everybody.

Anteater Racing Unveiling Event

UCI Racecar Unveiling
UCI Racecar Unveiling

This Saturday, April 23, 2016, at 12:00 PM, Anteater Racing will be unveiling the 2016 SAE fleet including Raider, Savage, and Electra at 12:00 PM at parking lot 16H on the UC Irvine campus. The unveiling will be followed by a free lunch along with a meet and greet session with the engineering students who designed and fabricated the cars. It will be a fun event with great people and great cars so come out and join us this Saturday.

UCI’s Baja SAE 2016 Vehicle Design is Well Under Way

The 2016 Baja SAE competition may be eight months away, but this year’s team is already hard at work designing Raider, their 2016 vehicle. After participating in the 2015 competition last year with XV, UCI’s first Baja car in ten years, the team has gotten invaluable feedback that is being utilized to drastically improve the design of this year’s car. Among other changes, Raider will be switching to a semi-trailing arm rear suspension; the chassis will be narrowed, shortened, and made lighter; and the powertrain of the vehicle will be geared more towards an acceleration quicker than last year’s.

Pictured above is a new team member installing one of XV‘s front brake calipers after having disassembled and analyzed the suspension components more closely. As part of the team, student members develop skills like consideration of fabrication feasibility and packaging management that are frequently overlooked in traditional classrooms.

The 2016 Season Has Begun!

2016 Season Registrations

Earlier this week, Anteater Racing’s intents for the 2016 season became official when they signed three cars up for participation in the 2016 SAE Collegiate Design series. The Baja team will be competing in May in Gorman, CA with the all-new Raider, and both the FSAE Internal Combustion (IC) and FSAE Electric teams will be returning to Lincoln, NE in June with a completely-redone Savage and the all-new Electra, respectively.

This is the first time that Anteater Racing will be taking three cars to competition in a single season, meaning that 2016 will without a doubt be the program’s most exciting season yet!

Fall Design Review

December 12 is the fall design review at University of California, Irvine.

Here we get a chance to share our accomplishments with the community and get graded on design and presentation of our work.

Here are our posters highlighting the current projects.
