Outreach: Workshops and Symposia

The Jarvo lab partners with groups on campus in a range of outreach and teaching activities, including career-development workshops for undergraduate students, graduate students, postdocs, and faculty.

UCI’s Southern California Undergraduate Chemistry Research Symposium

Professor Jarvo co-organizes an annual research symposium for SoCal undergrads that includes workshops, career panels and a poster session, held each summer since 2015.  In August 2023, 106 undergraduates from 19 institutions participated, with 82 poster presentations.  For more information, see the website: http://sites.uci.edu/ugradchem/

January 2017: We partnered to host ACS-COACh workshops “Negotiation 101” for graduate students and “Effective Negotiation Techniques” for Faculty.  Over 50 graduate students and 15 faculty attended sessions.

November 2013:  Iota Sigma Pi hosted the ACS-COACh workshop on “Effective Negotiation” with sessions for graduate students, postdocs, and faculty.

September 2013:  We partnered with UCI Advance and Professor Siwy (UCI Physics) to host an interactive seminar, “How to Feel as Bright and Capable as Everyone Thinks You Are” in collaboration with the UCI NSF-ADVANCE program. This workshop educates women and minorities to recognize and tackle common issues of self-doubt (“The Impostor Syndrome”) and was attended by over 180 graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty.  For more information on the Impostor Syndrome, see: https://counseling.caltech.edu/general/InfoandResources/Impostor
