Spring instructors: Your UCI Canvas integration priorities

Instructors are invited to take a short survey to identify any 3rd party tools or services they would like integrated with UCI Canvas:

Depending on the vendor, third party review and integration projects can take anywhere from a few weeks to a full quarter or longer.  Responses to this survey will help us prioritize the tools that matter most to campus instructors.

Update: Fall 2018 Survey on Instructors’ Third Party Tool Use, Needs, and Priorities

In Fall 2018, the EEE team surveyed instructors to learn more about third party technology use, needs, and priorities for Canvas integration.  The following summarizes related outcomes:

New Integrations

Integration with Pearson applications was one of the top requests and I am happy to report that this integration is now available alongside integrations from other publishers, Cengage, Macmillan, and McGraw-Hill.

Integrations currently under review

We are currently actively working to review and, if all goes well, integrate Badgr, Examity, Piazza, WileyPlus, and Zoom

Integrations up next for review

As we conclude current reviews, we will be following up on additional requests for integrations with (alphabetic order) Acadly, Kahoot, LabArchives ELN, Learning Catalytics, Loom, Packback, PitchVantage, SurveyMonkey, and WhatsApp.

Integrations that we cannot move forward at this time

There were several requests for integration with applications that we have learned do not currently offer Canvas integration. We’ve made contact with the vendors, Qualtrics and Quizlet, and will revisit these requests when and if the vendors add this capability.

We are also unable to move ahead with VoiceThread at this time because the integration is only available with a paid campus contractual agreement.

If you are affiliated with a program, department, or school that may be interested in acting as a sponsor for an initial agreement, please contact us.

We will continue to periodically reach out to learn more about instructors’ needs and help determine the relative priorities of different integration projects. Please contact us if there are any tools you would like to request or if you have any questions.

NEW: Student IDs in Canvas gradebook

A recent Canvas update enabled the EEE Team to build a tool for instructors that imports Student IDs into the Canvas gradebook. Here’s how to use it:

  1. In your Canvas course space, open the Grades tool.
  2. In the upper right, click the “Load Student ID #s” button.
  3. You should see a success message; press “Go back to my Canvas course space” to return to your gradebook and confirm the student ID numbers are now present.

Early in the Canvas transition we began to hear about the challenges presented by the lack of student ID numbers in the Canvas gradebook.

Thank you to everyone who raised this important issue. This update is a direct result of your feedback (https://sites.uci.edu/canvas/2018/09/27/instructors-top-canvas-concerns/). The more we know about your needs, any difficulties you’re encountering, and your innovative teaching ideas, the better equipped we are to help.

You can reach the EEE Team via eee-support@uci.edu or by calling the OIT Help Desk at (949) 824-2222 and we want to hear from you! Please let us know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns and we will do our utmost to help.
