Return to Academic Senate Approval for Online Classes Starting in Spring 2022

This message was sent to “All UCI Academics” on Friday, February 18, 2022 via ZotMail.

Dear colleagues,

Thank you for your hard work, dedication, and flexibility over the course of the Omicron surge. We are grateful for the empathy and understanding you have demonstrated while teaching under challenging circumstances.

As we prepare for the upcoming Spring Quarter, we wanted to ensure we’re all working with the same information.

The Academic Senate provided a temporary exception to policy to allow greater flexibility during the Fall 2021 and Winter 2022 quarters. As planned, we are returning to our standard academic policies and procedures for the Spring 2022 quarter.

Spring courses should be offered in the approved modality listed in the Schedule of Classes. Students are registering for classes with this modality information in mind, and the Academic Senate’s Subcommittee on Courses (SCOC) requires additional information for course proposals that replace traditional classroom meetings (lectures, discussions, laboratories, studio lessons, etc.) with synchronous or asynchronous online activities. Any course currently approved as a traditional in-person course must be resubmitted for SCOC approval if such replacements will occur.

If you have any questions about the process to request approval for a new or existing course in a hybrid or online modality, please contact your School’s SCOC representative.

The Council on Educational Policy (CEP) has approved a temporary, one-quarter exemption from an in-person mode of instruction with an approved disability accommodation certified by Disability Management Services to be confirmed by the instructor’s department. The instructor must be present online and available to interact with students during the virtual/remote quarter. Please contact the CEP Chair with any questions. Long-term changes in the mode of instruction will require revisions to the course plan and approval by SCOC as noted above.

As we continue to manage the realities of the pandemic, some students are likely to need flexibility to support their continued learning while in isolation or quarantine. We appreciate instructors working with these students to provide access to course content as appropriate. As a reminder, students seeking disability related accommodations should be directed to the Disability Services Center.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

Sincerely,
