Comparing US, Canada, Denmark and Vietnam as Ranked by Trusting
On Fareed Zacharia, he condensed a study in the Lancet ranking how countries responded to the Covid-19 by focusing on the US, Canada, Denmark, and Vietnam. These countries had much different infections per capita, which the study correlated with their ranking of trust in government and interpersonal trust. The US did worst in infections and trust, and Vietnam did best with both. The period was infections from January 2020 to September 2021.
In the Lancet article, for Infections per capita, 60.6% was unexplained. Next was Interpersonal Trust at 16.5%, Trust in Government at 7.4%, GDP per capita at 4.2%, Seasonality at 2.1%, and Population Density at 1.8%.
In the Lancet article, for the Infection Fatality Ratio, 44.4% was unexplained. Highestwas Age Structure at 46.7%, then GDP per capita at 3.1%, Population Density at 1.8%, and Body Mass Index at 1.1%.
In the Lancet article for the USA, the Unadjusted fatality rate was 7.48 per thousand. Of this, 3.33 was due to Age, 1.46 was due to BMI, but GDP per capita helped reduce it by 1.71, and previous Exposure to beta coronavirus help reduce it by 0.52. The Adjusted fatality rate was 4.55, meaning that 60.8% was unaccounted for by their analysis factors.
We are going to show new rankings for aspects of the Covid pandemic to June 1, 2022 using the IHME model. The IHME model often shows that very few of actual infections are detected. We will also compare the same countries including the reign of the Omicron variant which followed their time period. This will cover the projected Total Deaths per 100k until June 1, and the Estimated Percent infected as of January 31. We also compare these countries by Detection rate, Full Vaccination rate, and Masking percentage.
The infections shown in the article and on Fareed Zakaria’s show per 1,000 to September 2021are in the table below, along with the ratio of the three other countries to the US taken as 1.00.
Country US Canada Denmark Vietnam
Infect/k 545. 346. 166 67
Ratio to US 1.00 0.635 0.305 0.123
In the IHME projections for Total Deaths per 100,000 for June 1, gives:
Country US Canada Denmark Vietnam
Deaths/100k 328 161 152 117
Ratio to US 1.00 0.491 0.463 0.351
Canada and Denmark are close, but also about half the deaths per capita as the US. Vietnam is about a third of the US.
For the Percent Infected as of January 1, the IHME Briefings give:
Percent Inf. 72% 38% 70% 21%
Ratio to US 1.00 0.53 0.97 0.29
For percent infected, Denmark is comparable to the US while Canada is about a half, and Vietnam about a third.
The Detection rate in IHME as of January 31 is:
Percent Det. 13% 11% 40% 18%
Ratio to US 1.00 0.85 3.1 1.4
Denmark has a much better detection ratio than the other countries here.
We also compare the Full Vaccination rates on June 1, 2022, and the current Masking rates, the percentage of adults who are Obese, the Median Age, the Percent who are over 65, and the percent who have received a Booster shot:
Full Vax 71% 82% 79% 76%
Masking. 50%. 79%. 18%. 72%
Obesity 36.2% 29.4% 19.7% 2.1%
Median Age 38.5 41.8 42.0 31.9
Percent 65+ 16%. 17.2%. 19.6% 7%
Boosted 28% 45% 62% 32%
We see that the three comparison countries to the US are better vaccinated. Canada and Vietnam are much better masked than the US, while Denmark is much lower masked. Vietnam had the lowest obesity among 191 ranked countries. Vietnam also has a noticeably younger population and less than half the percentage of seniors of the other countries here. Canada and especially Denmark have received significantly more booster shots than the US.
The population of these countries span a large range: US 330 million; Vietnam 97.3 million; Canada 38.5 million; and Denmark 5.83 million.
