Clean and Fossil Fuel Energy Sources in California and Imported for 2020.
The data are from energy.ca.gov.
Summary
The California Mix of state supplied and imported electrical energy is 60% Clean energy, with 40% from fossil fuels. The fossil fuel is almost entirely natural gas, which is only half as CO2e emitting as coal. The California Mix of electrical energy is 70% California generated, and 30% Imports. The Imports are 80% Clean energy. The California produced electrical energy is 51% Clean, and 49% fossil fuel natural gas.
Tables
We are essentially rewriting the table of energy sources for 2020, but instead of absolute amounts, we are emphasizing the percentage amounts of California sources and Imported sources. We also break down Imported into NorthWest and SouthWest sources by percentages of Imported Power.
In the tables, the first column, CAMIX, is the Percent of the total of CA produced and Imported electrical energy. The column CA is the Percent of CA produced energy from each source. The column Imported is the percent of Imported power from each source. The columns NW and SW are the Percent share of Imported power from the NorthWest and SouthWest sources. Only columns NW and SW horizontally add up to Imported. The other do not add horizontally. Unspecified Power, mostly coming from the NW, is generally regarded as clean energy.

The total of California produced electrical energy is 70.04%, and of Imported electrical energy is 29.96%, or a 70%-30% split.
In the CAMIX, the Total Mix of electrical energy is 60% Clean and 40% fossil fuel, almost all the cleaner natural gas.
The CA produced energy is 51% Clean and 49% fossil fuel natural gas. In the previous article, we pointed out that the closing soon of the Diablo Canyon nuclear reactors will remove the 8.53% of California Clean nuclear energy.
The Imported energy is 80% Clean and 20% fossil fuel, with 11% natural gas and 9% coal.
The Imported energy is almost 50-50 split between NorthWest and SouthWest sources. The NorthWest sources are essentially all Clean power. The SouthWest sources are 60% Clean and 40% fossil fuel. Of those fossil fuel sources, 45% are Coal and 55% are Natural Gas.
