Data on Murders in US Cities from 2010 to 2012

I haven’t found a source that lists the murders for major US cities, so I have started collecting some for the most problematic cities.  http://www.city-data.com/ was helpful for city by city data for 2010 and 2011.  Doing this for each year, leaves some gaps in the table for now.  Whereas other data stresses the murder rate per 100,000, that really dilutes the inner city problem by the size of the outer city areas.  I consider each murder as well as each non-lethal assault a tragedy, and therefore list the actual number as the most important data.

Murders in US Cities

City 2010 2011 2012
New York 536 515 414
Chicago 436 435 506
Detroit 310 344
Philadelphia 306 324 331
Los Angeles 293 297
Houston 267 198 216
Baltimore 223 196
New Orleans 175 200
Memphis 93 147 157

Washington D.C. 132 108 88
Phoenix 117 116
Oakland 90 104 131
Las Vegas 107 82
Atlanta 93 88

In the early 90’s there were “cocaine wars” in the cities, and the peak of 943 murders was reached in Chicago in 1992, the peak of 600s was reached in LA, and the peak of 471 in Washington, D.C. in 1991.
