April 7. The Coronavirus is Two to Three Times as Deadly for African Americans

I updated my article on the now 8 states which do not have stay-at-home orders,   Dr. Fauci said that Nebraska and Iowa effectively have such orders  These changes reduced the number not under such orders from 22 million to 12.5 million, or almost a cut by half the size of a Second Wave.  Also, California, which was previously supposed to peak around April 28, is now moved two weeks earlier to April 15, and won’t be part of a Second Wave.  We may also then get out of confinement two weeks earlier.

It’s odd that it took so long to be revealed that the Coronavirus deaths are occurring among African Americans at two to three time the rates of others.  This is shown below.

In Illinois (Chicago), blacks have not about triple the percent of deaths, at 42%, to their population percentage at 15%.  But, they also are almost half of the deaths there, also.  In Louisiana (New Orleans), blacks are two thirds of the deaths at 70%, and over twice as much as their one-third fraction of the population.  In Michigan (Detroit and Dearborn), the ratio of blacks to others in the percent of deaths is a factor of three again.

Update, April 8.  New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo presented the New York State and New York City enhancements of Coronavirus deaths for Hispanics and Blacks.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said in his talk that while African Americans are 9% of the population, they are 17% of deaths, or twice.

There are three main factors that have been advanced to explain this in talks today.

First, African Americans have high incidences of diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, and heart disease.

Second, African Americans have a large percentage of essential jobs, as in transportation, government work, and janitorial work, so they are not isolating.

The comptroller of New York City reports that 75% of frontline workers are people of color.  They make up 82% of cleaning services, and Hispanics make up 60% of cleaning services.  40% of transit workers are black.

Third, Mayor Garcetti cited a poll that while 35% at large were very concerned about the Coronavirus, only 22% of African Americans were.

Someone from New Orleans added that Blacks need access to quality health care, and to maintenance to avoid or mitigate bad health conditions.

One commenter pointed out that this was the result of the history of racism and segregation.

The other surprise today was that a previous UC Irvine business professor, Peter Navarro, wrote a report at the end of January forecasting a catastrophic Coronavirus outbreak.  He is usually associated with the administration’s anti-China policies and xenophobia.  Oddly, he is not on the Coronavirus Task Force.

The US has now reached four hundred thousand cases, which is 28% of the World’s total cases, at 1,431,275.

The US has 12,907 deaths, led by New York at 5,489, which contains 4,009 in New York City.  New Jersey follows with 1,232, and Michigan with 845.  California has 452.

We show the Domains, the number of Cases, and the Percent Increase for the US and leading states, and nearby domains.

Domain Cases Percent Increase

Mexico 2,785 14.2%
Brazil 14,049 14.9%
Los Angeles County 7,025 10.5%
Orange County 931 5.56%

The US had been doing well around 13%, but then yesterday, it jumped to 18.0%. Fortunately, today it was about 8.6%.  Averaging these two gives 13.3%, so I am still hopeful that we are in that range.

Georgia stands out at 21.1%, and Missouri at 17.3%.

Domains around 15% are Brazil, Mexico, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.  Many states gained less than 10%, and it couldn’t have been a weekend effect.  We hope this continues.  In particular, New York had a 6.50% to perhaps balance the high 15.5% yesterday.
