Throughout high school and college, I have been involved in a few sustainability clubs. One of the clubs that I joined as a first year here at UCI was CALPIRG. This organization presented me a wide arrange of concerns I believe we all should have regarding the environment, such as how plastic bags impact the coasts and marine life. Consequently, I find sustainability to be an important aspect of understanding our way of living and what must be done in order to make the Earth more “green” for future generations. The clubs that I am currently involved with include Intramural Soccer, R.I.S.E. Mentorship program, and Colleges Against Cancer. I am blessed and grateful to be involved in each of these unique groups, and especially the Costa Rica Program.
What I hope to contribute to the CRP team this year is friendship and diversity. And by diversity I don’t refer to my Hispanic heritage, but the ability to implement the fact that I know Spanish. I feel like this will benefit me while communicating with people in Costa Rica, and also help my group when they need something. What I hope to gain from the CRP is more knowledge regarding sustainability and its concepts and learning about the world outside California. For the first time, I will have the opportunity to accomplish part of my checklist, which is to travel for a good cause. While in Costa Rica, I will definitely be looking forward to taking pictures as part of my new adventure, as well as interacting with the Ticos to get to know their culture more.
